South Carolina Football: Gamecock quarterback recruit breaks NFL Hall of Famer’s record

Quarterback recruiting has been much better of late for the South Carolina football program. Young talents like LaNorris Sellers and Tanner Bailey are already on the USC roster, and Dante Reno (class of 2024) and Landon Duckworth (class of 2026) have made public pledges to play for the Gamecocks.

In the 2025 recruiting cycle, offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains is in on several big-time prospects. Last month, one of these prospects put the Gamecocks in his top-5. Ryan Montgomery of Findlay, Ohio is considering the South Carolina football program along with fellow finalists Michigan, Penn State, Florida, and Georgia.

Over the weekend, Montgomery did something quite special on the football field.

In a win Friday night against Southview High School, the 4-star quarterback had a record-breaking performance. Going 32-37 with 6 touchdowns, Montgomery’s 491 yards broke a record that had been in place for over 20 years.

The previous record-holder was none other than future Pro Football Hall of Famer Ben Roethlisberger. Roethlisberger went on to become a 1st-round pick in the 2004 NFL Draft and won two Super Bowls with the Pittsburgh Steelers during his 6-time Pro Bowl career.

Montgomery has the potential to be an elite player at the quarterback position, just like the future Hall of Famer with whom he shares an alma mater.

As a player, Montgomery is big-armed but extremely accurate. In fact, earlier this summer, he won the accuracy challenge at the Under Armour Future 50 Camp.

Montgomery is also a good athlete. He is not the type of quarterback who takes off running often, but he uses his athleticism to buy more time to find receivers open downfield.

His brother Luke is a freshman offensive lineman at Ohio State, but the hometown Buckeyes are currently not in the running to land the younger Montgomery.
