So close: South Carolina Mega Millions players barely miss jackpot, now over 0 million

Although no one won the half a billion dollar jackpot, two South Carolina players did become millionaires, willing $1 and $2 million. The next drawing of the Mega Millions will be on Friday.

No one could claim the $500 million jackpot in Mega Millions Tuesday night’s drawing but two players from South Carolina walked away with seven-figure jackpots by matching five numbers in the draw.

Two new millionaires were crowned in South Carolina as both of them matched the five white balls but missed the golden Mega Ball. One of the players won $2 million as they paid an extra $1 for the Megaplier while the other player netted $1 million.

Since no grand prize winners were had on Tuesday, the Mega Millions jackpot has now increased to an estimated $627 million for the drawing on Friday, making it the ninth-largest in the game’s history.

Friday will be the ninth time the Mega Millions drawing jackpot has surpassed $600 million since the game began in 2002. The cash option for Friday’s drawing will be an estimated $309.1 million.

The drawing on Tuesday had a total of 1,202,189 winning tickets sold across the county, with 30 of them matching four white balls in addition to the Mega Ball, winning players $10,000 each. Ten of those netted players $20,000 as they purchased the Megaplier.

What were the winning numbers on Tuesday’s Mega Millions?

The winning numbers drawn on Tuesday night were 16, 18, 21, 54, 65 with a Mega Ball of 05 and a Megaplier of 2x.

How do I play the Mega Millions?

In order to buy a ticket, you’ll have to visit your local convenience store, gas station or grocery store − and in a handful of states, you can purchase tickets online.

To play, you will need to pick six numbers. Five numbers will be white balls ranging from 1 to 70. The gold Mega Ball is one number between 1 and 25.

If you believe the odds are against you, ask for a ”Quick Pick” or an ”Easy Pick,” the computer will randomly generate the numbers for you.

Players can add the ”Megaplier” for $1, which can increase non-grand prize winnings by two, three, four or five times. The Megaplier is drawn before the Mega Millions numbers on Tuesday and Friday.

There are 15 Megapiler balls in all:

2X, five balls
3X, six balls
4X, three balls
5X, one ball

Tickets can be purchased in person at gas stations, convenience stores and grocery stores. Some airport terminals may also sell lottery tickets.

Two dead in South Carolina from Listeria linked to recalled deli meat

LOWCOUNTRY, S.C. (WCIV) — Two have died in the Lowcountry potentially due to a national Listeria outbreak linked to recalled Boar’s Head deli meat, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Health.

“Unfortunately, an outbreak of Listeria has reached our state, and is potentially the cause of two deaths here,” said Dr. Linda Bell, State Epidemiologist in a prepared statement. “We want to ensure South Carolinians are aware of this outbreak and that everyone takes necessary steps to avoid consuming products that could be the source of infection.”

Data from the DPH shows that some deli sliced meats, including Boar’s Head brand liverwurst, are contaminated with Listeria and are making people sick, according to CDC. Boar’s Ready to eat meat and other deli products from the same processing plant have also been recalled.

Since July, the CDC has been investigating the Listeria outbreak, which has led to 43 hospitalizations and three deaths across 13 states as of Aug. 8.

In order to avoid contracting Listeria, the DPH and CDC recommend throwing away recalled meats and understand that Listeria can grow on foods kept in the refrigerator.

Concerned individuals who might have bought recalled meats are advised to cleantheir refrigerators.

Delis that received recalled meats should thoroughly clean and sanitize all food and non-food surfaces and throw away any open meats and cheeses. The United States Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service also advises businesses to use best practicesfor controllingListeriacontamination in deli areas.

Shane Beamer Speaks to the Media Ahead of Matchup vs Old Dominion

South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer hosts his last press conference before the Gamecocks take on the Monarchs of Old Dominion.

First and foremost, Coach Beamer was asked about injuries heading into this weekend. As we learned last week, the team is relatively healthy outside of two members on the offensive line.

“He’ll be out,” Coach Beamer speaking on Jakai Moore’s availability for Saturday. “He and Aaryn Parks both. That’ll be a week to week thing for now.”

On the other side of the ball, the defensive line rotation has been a key topic for players and coaches this offseason. Specifically talking about the defensive tackle group, Coach Beamer and defensive coordinator Clayton White have a plan for those guys.

“You’re going to see a deeper rotation than what you had last season. We have more depth and we need to play our guys. We know it’s going to be hot Saturday. Play our players and keep them fresh,” Coach Beamer speaks on his defensive tackle group.

Yesterday, the Gamecocks released a preemptive depth chart for this week. But before conclusions are drawn and hot takes are made, Coach Beamer says it’s not set in stone.

“It’s all personnel driven for us in so many ways, as far as certain plays, certain schemes, how the game’s going,” Coach Beamer said about the released depth chart for week one. “There’s guys that aren’t listed on the depth chart that are going to play a lot on Saturday on offense and defense.”

One of those listed as a backup option for the Gamecocks is running back JuJu McDowell. Though an injury hampered his 2023 season, he’s healthy now and looks to provide a nice change of pace to starter Raheim Sanders.

“JuJu’s [McDowell} a guy that we have confidence in,” Coach Beamer said. “He’s a competitor, he brings great spirit to our team. He knows the offense. We can do a lot of things with him.”

Lastly Coach Beamer took the time to shout out the top player of the preseason. Vershon Lee has been a part of the South Carolina program for the last five seasons. He’s been the “glue” for the offensive line since last season.

“We named Vershon Lee the top performer of the preseason camp. You talk about a guy last year that polayed center, guard, tackle, he had to do it all last season because of the injuries we had on the offensive line. He’s doing a good job of leading the offensive line,” Coach Beamer on naming Vershon Lee the top performer of preseason camp.

South Carolina takes on Old Dominion this Saturday at 4:00 pm.
