Gamecocks pro day participants hoping for more “South Carolina Panthers”
While Emmanwori was a big part of the reason so many teams descended on Columbia this week, there was plenty of intriguing talent on hand, such as defensive tackle Tonka Hemingway. The younger brother of former Chiefs wide receiver Junior Hemingway, Tonka said his brother’s advice was to just be himself in each interaction. So on Tuesday, that was his goal.
“I really, I feel like I did really good from my head up, you know, meeting wise, and then also, showed my athletic ability so that I can play at this level,” he said.
Linebacker Demetrius Knight, who had a stint in Charlotte with the 49ers, also drew eyes after his 82 tackles, 2.0 sacks, one interception season. For the sixth-year senior though, Tuesday was just another day to stack towards a future.
“Never being content with myself,” Knight said of his goal each rep, facing every day with a mindset of, “I had a day to get better from. I did things today that I can learn from, and then, you know, you get better. Days like today, we’re going to stack on that.
“We’re going to continue to stack this day Pro Day until we get drafted and then on this to the NFL.”
As pro days wind down over the next week or so, clubs will turn their attention towards team visits and final interviews. There is still much to learn and plenty unknown between now and then. But for the group walking off the field Tuesday afternoon, there was also a hope that this class of prospects could continue the trip north to Charlotte, and add to the “South Carolina Panthers.”

Kickoff Time, TV Assignment Announced for Alabama Football at South Carolina

The Alabama Crimson Tide will head to Williams-Brice Stadium in week nine to take on Shane Beamer and the South Carolina Gamecocks on October 25, but have seemingly been spared from the most impactful type of environment in Columbia.
It was announced on Monday, October 13 that the showdown between the two preseason SEC contenders would take place at 2:30 p.m. CT with the game being broadcast nationally on ABC. Last season’s game kicked off at 11:00 a.m. CT, and finished with a 27-24 victory for the Crimson Tide.
As of right now, Alabama is ranked as the No. 6 team in the nation, per the AP Poll, and South Carolina has fallen all the way out of the rankings after an abysmal 3-3 start to the season.
Despite a tough start for Beamer’s squad, the Gamecocks still have one of the SEC’s most electrifying players at the quarterback position, and have been able to get after opposing teams effectively with a strong pass rush.
So far, through six games, South Carolina has 14 sacks with half of them coming from two players, Dylan Stewart and Bryan Thomas, Jr. Compare this to Alabama’s nine sacks through six games, and the path to victory for the Gamecocks becomes more and more clear.
The two schools faced off against each other for the first time in 1937, and have met 15 more times since. Alabama leads the series 12-4 and is currently riding a two game win streak, dating back to 2019 when the Tide won by a score of 47-23.
The last loss Alabama suffered to South Carolina came at the hands of Steve Spurrier and Stephen Garcia in 2010, when the Gamecocks won 35-21 and went on to face with Auburn in the SEC Championship game, ultimately losing to the same Tigers team that also beat Alabama that year.
This year’s edition of the Crimson Tide is currently riding a three game win streak against top 25 opponents, and have the chance to make it four ahead of the trip to Columbia, South Carolina. Alabama will face off at home against Tennessee the week prior, and will likely need to recover from an emotional matchup in order to perform well against the Gamecocks.
Since taking over as head coach, Kalen DeBoer has struggled on the road, amassing a 4-5 record in true road environments. While on paper this year’s Alabama team seems to be one of the hottest in the nation, it will have its work cut out for it on the road against a South Carolina team that is still quite talented.

Shooting at crowded South Carolina bar leaves four dead

A mass shooting at a crowded bar in the southern US state of South Carolina has left four people dead and at least 20 injured, officials said.
Hundreds of people were gathered at the popular bar on St Helena Island in the early hours of Sunday morning when gunfire broke out, leading multiple victims and witnesses to run to nearby businesses for shelter, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s office.
Four people were declared dead at the bar and at least 20 were injured, including four who were sent to local hospitals in critical condition, the sheriff’s office said.
The incident is still under investigation, and the sheriff’s office is looking into possible suspects, it said.
When police and first responders arrived, they found several people suffering from gunshot wounds, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
It’s not clear if the shooting was random or targeted, and a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office declined to share more details.
Robert Adams, who lives up the street from the bar, told the Island Packet, a local outlet, that he heard automatic gunfire that sounded “like a machine gun”.
A cook who works at the bar told the outlet he “heard a lot of shots” fired.
The bar where the shooting took place, Willie’s Bar and Grill, offers Gullah-inspired cuisine and says on its website that it aims to spread the “heartwarming spirit of the Gullah Geechee culture”. The Gullah Geechee people are descendants of Africans who were enslaved on plantations along the south-eastern US coast, including in South Carolina.
Willie’s did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the BBC.
“COMPLETELY HEARTBROKEN to learn about the devastating shooting in Beaufort County,” South Carolina Republican Representative Nancy Mace wrote on X.
“Our prayers are with the victims, their families, and everyone impacted by this horrific act of violence.”
Congressman James Clyburn, a Democrat of South Carolina, wrote on X that he’s “devastated” by the “senseless tragedy”.
In 2022, there was another shooting at the same location, then the Island Grill, that left two people with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, according to the Island Packet.
Earlier this month, two separate shootings at South Carolina State University, about 100 miles (160km) north of St Helena Island, left one person dead and another injured.

South Carolina’s New State Park Will Offer Outdoor Recreation With Eerily Beautiful Water – Explore

South Carolina is known for its sunny beaches and peaceful waterways, and has attracted tourists to its ecological state parks for decades. Soon, tourists and locals will be able to add another park to their must-see list. Initiated by the Open Space Institute (OSI), over 1,800 acres will be named the Black River State Park, South Carolina’s newest state park in over 20 years. Just as the name sounds, the park will be focused along the shores of the Black River, making it South Carolina’s first “linear” park. It will also link the counties of Williamsburg and Georgetown, fostering community and connection through the river.
The South Carolina park will be the perfect summer getaway, with visitors enjoying the river through various activities such as swimming, paddleboarding, and kayaking, as well as camping and hiking alongside the river. A visit to the park can easily turn into the perfect ecological escape, as the head ranger at Black River State Park, John Moon, told the Post and Courier, “You could break it down into a week-long vacation of just being on the water and staying overnight at various places.” The park is being developed with versatility in mind.
The Black River Initiative
Black River State Park is the result of an initiative led by the OSI in collaboration with the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism (SCPRT). The Black River Initiative is both a conservationist and cultural movement, aiming to protect the land surrounding Black River and reconnect locals with their history. The first sector, or “tract,” of the park, called The Meadows, will feature a visitor center offering historical learning opportunities that focus on the indigenous and Gullah Geechee communities around the river. There will be several other tracts, with various river entry points.
As for conservation, the parklands will be protected by the OSI and SCPRT from overdevelopment. The OSI has already saved thousands of acres of land to be protected under the initiative, which will shield them from erosion and flooding. Located about 70 miles from Charleston, visiting the park would be an easy, scenic South Carolina road trip. Black River State Park is set to open in 2026 and is projected to see a boost in ecological tourism as a result.
