Caden Sorrell’s walk-off home run leads Texas A&M past South Carolina 8-7 on Thursday
Texas A&M (18-15, 4-9 SEC) has now won four consecutive games after defeating South Carolina 8-7 in 10 innings after star outfielder, now DH Caden Sorrell hit a walk-off home run after the Gamecocks tied the game in the top of the eighth. Thanks to the relief pitcher Weston Moss, the Aggies didn’t allow another run for the final three innings.
On the mound, ace Ryan Prager was up and down, allowing five earned runs, including two home runs, but did strikeout eight batters, lasting 6.2 innings. The runs are disappointing, but Prager’s lasting six-plus innings saved the bullpen for the weekend, which, outside of winning, was the overall goal for the series.
The Aggies continued to churn out runs at the plate, as their performance against Tennessee was not a fluke. Wyatt Henseler’s RBI single gave A&M a 1-0 lead, but after Ethan Petry and Beau Hollins’ home runs, the Aggies trailed 3-1 but were completely unfettered in the bottom of the third.
Catcher Bear Harrison, who is hitting nearly .500 over his last three games, delivered with an RBI single, followed by backup first baseman Blake Binderup’s grand slam, taking what looked like a dominant 6-3 lead. However, a fielding error by second baseman Ben Royo resulted in several Gamecock runs. Still, the Aggies continued to deliver as Binderup recorded his second hit, sending Caden Sorrell home.
After Weston Moss took over for Prager in the seventh, his only earned run allowed came off a Nathan Hall home run, while South Carolina’s game-tying run came off a fielding error after Blake Binderup fumbled a throw from Moss.
Said game-tying run was the only downside of Weston Moss’s incredible night, allowing four hits while tying Prager with eight strikeouts, including three consecutive strikeouts in the top of the tenth. In the bottom of the frame, Caden Sorrell, who had yet to record a hit, ended the game on the first pitch, delivering his fifth home run on the year and giving the Aggies their 18th win and fourth in SEC play.
Texas A&M will host South Carolina for Game 2 of the series on Friday, April 11, at 6:00 p.m. CT. The game will be available to stream on SEC Network+.
