USS Oklahoma marine buried at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific
HONOLULU (KHON2) – A marine who served on the USS Oklahoma on the day of the Pearl Harbor assault in 1941 was buried at Nationwide Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl on Friday, June 3.
Marine Pfc. Walter Leon Collier, 20, of Burbank, California, from WWII was recognized in Might 2021 by the Protection POW/MIA Accounting Company.
Collier was assigned to the battleship USS Oklahoma, which was moored at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, when the ship was attacked by Japanese plane on Dec. 7, 1941. The USS Oklahoma had a number of torpedo hits, and it capsized. There have been 429 crewmen who died from the assault together with Collier.
His providers had been scheduled for December 2021. His navy burial ceremony was postponed to June 3, 81 years after his demise..

The Navy recovered the stays of the deceased crew from the USS Oklahoma from December 1941 to June 1944. They had been interred within the Halawa and Nu’uanu Cemeteries. The American Graves Registration Service (AGRS) disinterred the stays of U.S. casualties from the the Halawa and Nu’uanu Cemeteries and took them to the Central Identification Laboratory positioned at Schofield Barracks in September 1947. There have been 35 navy males from the USS Oklahoma recognized. The AGRS buried unidentified stays in 46 plots on the Nationwide Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. In October 1949, a navy board labeled those that couldn’t be recognized as non-recoverable, together with Collier.

The Protection POW/MIA Accounting Company exhumed the USS Oklahoma Unknowns from the Punchbowl for evaluation between June and November 2015, Scientists from the Protection POW/MIA Accounting Company and the Armed Forces Medical Examiner Sytem used anthropological evaluation and mitchondrial DNA evaluation to establish Collier and others.
