Oklahoma reaches record-breaking domestic violence deaths in 2023
LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) – Domestic violence-related homicides in Oklahoma hit a record high in 2023, with numbers spiking 16 percent from the previous year.
Bringing a total of 122 victims in 2023, according to the annual report released by the Oklahoma Domestic Violence Fatality Review Board.
The board works to reduce the number of domestic violence-related deaths by identifying gaps in prevention and protection systems.
The board makes recommendations to the state Legislature annually, such as:
- Establishing a fund for a statewide program for children impacted
- Enacting a domestic violence-specific hearsay exception to bolster evidence-based prosecution
- Strengthening areas of state Victim Protection Order laws
- Amending state statutes to eliminate discrepancies related to domestic violence crimes.
