After nearly three decades, Pitt County, North Carolina is changing up service providers for recycled materials with hopes for upgrade facilities and job retention.

For 28 years, Eastern Carolina Vocational Center (ECVC) handled all of Pitt County’s recyclable materials. But that contract has been terminated and now the county is shifting to a new contract proposed with Recycling and Disposal Solutions (RDS).

Pitt County Solid Waste Director John Demary said that ECVC is stepping down from recycling responsibilities due to increased service prices. ECVC is under new management as well.

“The Board asked us to go out to bid and see what other options we were to have and so through that process, this option has come up which we think will be very good,” said Demary on the Board of Commissioners asking Pitt County Solid Waste to seek out alternatives.

The contract with ECVC ends on August 1 after which, RDS will be purchasing an ECVC facility and take over from there.

“They will refurbish the facility, upgrade it…more technology and will continue to process our recyclable materials,” Demary said.
