North Carolina State Fair marks 169th anniversary – WWAYTV3
RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — It’s formally been 169 years since North Carolina held its first State Honest.
The primary truthful kicked off on October 18, 1853 simply south of downtown Raleigh. The truthful ran 4 days and noticed a peak attendance of 4,000 folks on a single day. Money prizes had been awarded for first and second place in plant, animal and handicraft competitions.
The truthful ran annually till 1861 when it was cancelled till 1868 as a result of Civil Warfare.
The truthful was re-opened in 1869 by the Agricultural Society and remained on the similar location till 1872.
In 1873, with help from town of Raleigh, the Agricultural Society bought a 55-acre tract on Hillsborough Road and moved the truthful to that location throughout from NC State College. In 1928, the truthful moved to its current location on Blue Ridge Highway.
