North Carolina Central University unveils sculpture of alum, NBA legend Sam Jones

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) — Considered one of North Carolina Central College’s most well-known alums obtained fairly the honour on campus Saturday.

A sculpture was unveiled of Sam Jones who handed away in 2021. His household was in attendance on the occasion held in Durham.

Jones graduated from then North Carolina School in 1957 and went on to win 10 NBA championships with the Boston Celtics.

His ten championships are second all-time behind Invoice Russell, Jones’ Celtics teammate.

“I am simply glad to be again on dad’s campus,” stated Aubre Jones, Jones’ son. “I’ve worn completely different jerseys for colleges I’ve labored for however at present I put on this shirt and I am a Central Eagle at present.”

The sculpture, which stands 30 inches tall and 22 inches vast, was created by award-winning artist Douglas Aja, who is predicated in Vermont.

After the revealing Saturday, the sculpture can be prominently displayed in McDougald-McLendon Enviornment in celebration of the lifetime of Sam Jones.

“All the pieces goes via your thoughts,” stated Michael Jones. “I am simply the proudest son on the earth. I’ve lived 62 years with that man telling me tales and watching him play.”
