NC State Radio Broadcaster Suspended Indefinitely After “Illegal Aliens” Remark

Longtime North Carolina State play-by-play radio announcer Gary Hahn has been suspended indefinitely after an on-air comment about “unlawful aliens” in the course of the Duke’s Mayo Bowl Friday.

Hahn made the remark in the course of the staff’s 16-12 loss to Maryland as he reported the rating of the Solar Bowl. “Amongst all of the unlawful aliens down in El Paso, it’s UCLA 14 and Pittsburgh 6….” Hahn stated. “That’s with 11:15 to go within the second quarter.”

Learfield Communications, the NC State broadcast rights holder, is Hahn’s employer and confirmed the suspension in a press release to ESPN.

“LEARFIELD has suspended Wolfpack Sports activities Community Play-by-Play announcer Gary Hahn from his settlement indefinitely following feedback made throughout immediately’s Duke’s Mayo Bowl radio broadcast.”

The town of El Paso issued an emergency declaration earlier this month to handle the rise in migrants crossing the southern border looking for asylum, citing harmful winter climate and to develop accessible shelters. The Solar Bowl fanfest was canceled final week as a result of the town of El Paso is utilizing its conference heart to deal with round 1,000 immigrants. 

Hahn, often known as the Voice of the Wolfpack, has been the radio announcer for NC State soccer and basketball video games since 1990-91. 

He was the North Carolina Sportscaster of the Yr in 2011 and 2020. 

Previous to becoming a member of North Carolina State, Hahn labored as a sport reporter/anchor for NBC Radio Community in New York Metropolis and WLWI-TV in Indianapolis.
