Group buys site of major Civil War battle in North Carolina

JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — A nonprofit targeted on preserving historic U.S. battlefields has made a giant land buy in Johnston County.

American Battlefield Belief, primarily based in Washington, D.C., purchased 139.4 acres in Johnston County for $725,000, in accordance with a deed filed Feb. 22. The acquisition worth comes out to $5,200 an acre.

The land sits within the southern tip of Johnston County alongside its border with Wayne County. The property is bisected by St. Johns Church Street.

The positioning is the place the Battle of Bentonville occurred March 19-21, 1865, through the Civil Warfare.
