Google Fiber Brings 5 GB Speeds To North Carolina | Cord Cutters News

Google Fiber continues to quietly improve its service in parts of the nation. On Wednesday, the company said it has started offering 5 gigabit internet speeds in North Carolina.

Google said it was working to bring an 8 GB option to its various markets too.

North Carolina represents the sixth market to get those kinds of speeds from Google Fiber. It also falls in line with the two other local providers, AT&T Fiber and Metronet, which also offers 5 GB speeds in select markets.

That caliber of speed would suit more professional settings, and has a price to match. The service costs $125 a month, compared with the $100-a-month 2 GB option.

Beyond North Carolina, Kansas City, Salt Lake City and Provo, Utah, are the other three markets with 5 GB service. Mesa, Arizona, and Des Moines, Iowa, are the two markets with both 5 GB and 8 GB options.

Google Fiber emerged with a bang in 2010, with cities clamoring to be the first to get hooked up. But just six years, the company halted expansion due to the cost and logistical complications. Then last year, Google Fiber surprisingly started up again and has been steadily adding markets and speeds in select areas in the country.
