Jordan, a Vietnam War veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder, was sentenced to death in 1976 for killing and kidnapping Edwina Marter.

Court records say that Jordan called the Gulf National Bank in Gulfport and asked to speak with a loan officer in January 1976. After he was told that Charles Marter could speak to him, he hung up. He then looked up the Marter’s home address in a telephone book and kidnapped Edwina Marter.

“Before the State executed Richard, he had received Tier Worker status in prison, a position of trust given to inmates who have shown good behavior and no record violation reports for a long period of time. Richard was a mentor to other inmates and known for lessening conflicts among his peers.”

She added that the jury “never heard about Richard’s service to his country and his resulting PTSD before sentencing him to death.”

What Happens Next

Four more men are scheduled to be put to death in three states in 2025. The first is the execution of Michael Bell in Florida, which is scheduled to take place on July 15.

Esquire names Mississippi seafood place among Top 33 best new restaurants

A Mississippi restaurant has made a short list of the hottest new restaurants in America for 2025. Esquire named the 33 best new places to eat.

Siren Social Club in Gulfport made the Esquire list of the Top 33 new restaurants in the U.S. Chef Adam Sumrall and his wife and business partner Tresse Sumrall recently attended a party in New York City to celebrate the honor.

“Their admirably robust menu indulges coastal cravings via seasonal oysters and Gulf shrimp while appeasing land lovers with steakhouse favorites and handmade pastas,” Miller wrote.

Esquire highlighted the “luxe party food,” particularly crispy chicken with hot honey, thousand-layer potatoes, beef Wellington and a shrimp cocktail that comes with buttered crackers.

Current menu listings include a caviar service, beef tartare and pork chop paillard.
