Historic Natchez Foundation to host annual meeting Thursday – Mississippi’s Best Community Newspaper

The Historic Natchez Basis invitations the Natchez group to attend its annual assembly on Thursday, Jan. 12, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Auburn, 400 Duncan Ave.

The assembly is a free group occasion and you don’t want to be a member to attend.  We encourage everybody to come back and produce a pal. The annual assembly will start with a cocktail buffet and conclude with a brief enterprise assembly to elect new board members and current the 2022 preservation awards. 

A Nationwide Historic Landmark, Auburn launched classical structure to the Mississippi Territory. Levi Weeks designed and constructed the home in 1812 for Lyman Harding, legal professional for Aaron Burr in 1807 and the state’s first legal professional basic in 1817.

In 1827, Auburn grew to become residence to Dr. Stephen Duncan, regarded by many historians because the South’s most profitable cotton planter. A robust Unionist, he publicly pledged to depart the state if it seceded, and he spent the rest of his life in New York Metropolis.

In 1911, Duncan’s heirs donated Auburn and 203 acres to the Metropolis of Natchez for use without end as a public park. The Historic Natchez Basis is working with the town to find out the longer term administration of this necessary web site.  

Historic preservation awards will probably be given out on the assembly for current tasks. Marcy and Joseph Brown will obtain the Ethel and George Kelly Restoration Award for his or her in depth restoration work on the primary home and the outbuildings at Oakland Plantation in southern Adams County.

Instructions for parking:  Enter the primary drive into Duncan Park and take the second proper which terminates in a paved parking space on the rear of Auburn. This car parking zone served the previous Junior Auxiliary Canteen.
