Miami-Dade school board hears hourslong debate over recognizing LGBTQ History Month
The Miami-Dade County school board heard a mix of passionate opinions at a meeting Wednesday over a proposal to recognize LGBTQ+ History Month in October.
The item this year, known as H-10, reads that recognizing and observing LGBTQ+ History Month would still comply with state and federal laws in a way that does not affect curriculum and instruction. It was proposed by board member Lucia Baez Geller, who is also running for Congress.
If passed, the recognition of the history month would be ceremonial and not impact instructional material.
“This item is solely a symbolic gesture to recognize LGBTQ History Month as we do so many endorsements throughout the year,” Baez Geller said. “It does not pertain to curriculum.”
Parents, teachers and community members spoke before the school board for hours on Wednesday.
Those for acknowledging LGBTQ+ History Month say it’s about fostering an inclusive environment.
“If we truly want to teach children of Miami-Dade County Public Schools to cultivate empathy for others, we need them to understand that means for all people, and that starts by understanding everyone’s history,” a supporter said.
Those who argued against it said it’s an attempt to indoctrinate students.
“Young children do not need to learn about sexuality and queerness in school,” an opponent said. “I want to be the one teaching my child if and when he is ready. We want to keep this out of the schools. Please vote no we will not allow one more inch.”
The last time LGBTQ+ History Month was recognized was in 2021. The measure was voted down the last two years, with the board citing the Parental Rights in Education Law, which restricts classroom discussion on gender identity and sexual orientation.

A Greg Dulcich breakout – The Splash Zone 6/9/26
The Miami Dolphins obtained Greg Dulcich before the beginning of last season and threw him on the practice squad. It didn’t take him long to be called up and he made the most of his opportunity. Over the final nine games of the season, Dulcich recorded 26 receptions for 335 yards and 1 touchdown. He was set to be a free agent, but Jon-Eric Sullivan quickly brought him back and views him as a breakout candidate for the Dolphins this year. With not much star power at receiver, Dulcich could be relied upon and could potentially be one of the top targets on this Dolphins offense.

Beginning in October with the 2026–27 NBA season, WPLG Local 10 will air all non-nationally televised HEAT games on free, over-the-air television. This agreement ensures that all 5.8 million viewers across South Florida will have access to HEAT games throughout WPLG’s full broadcast reach.
The partnership extends beyond HEAT game coverage, providing fans with unparalleled access to comprehensive HEAT programming. Viewers can enjoy special content such as the Miami HEAT Annual Gala Special, the Miami HEAT Family Festival Special, and additional exclusive programming—all available free on Local 10.
“We are thrilled to be the One and Only, Home of the Miami HEAT” said Bert Medina, WPLG President & CEO. “No matter where our viewers want to watch the Miami HEAT on cable, satellite, over the air antenna or our FREE streaming APP. Our mission is to make sure they have easy direct access to every game on our air.”
In addition to broadcast coverage, HEAT games will also be available on Local 10’s new free streaming platform, LOCAL 10+ Platinum. The platform allows fans to watch games on smartphones, tablets, and smart TVs, along with additional exclusive HEAT content and specials.
“We’re very excited to be on Local 10 this upcoming season,” said Michael McCullough, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of the Miami HEAT. “Last season was a great experience not only for the HEAT and Local 10, but the fans as well. The increased viewership proved the strength of this partnership and the benefit of having the local reach of WPLG was unmistakable. We’re looking forward to taking this to the next level this upcoming season and giving HEAT Nation a truly special viewing experience.”
The HEAT and Local 10 will announce the full 2026–27 broadcast schedule, along with additional programming and content, following the NBA’s official schedule release later this summer.
