MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – The Miami-Dade Police Department confirmed Monday morning that it has made over 100 arrests since Friday as ATV riders, motorcyclists dirt bike riders and even bicyclists took over roadways ahead of the annual Wheels Up, Guns Down ride.

The South Florida ride-out typically takes place annually on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but people took the streets early this year.

Police confirmed there were 48 arrests on Sunday alone and 144 total arrests since Friday.

A total of 20 firearms have been impounded and 554 citations issued.

According to Miami-Dade police, 58 vehicles were impounded and 14 stolen vehicles have been recovered.

In past years, ATV, dirt bike riders and cyclists have driven recklessly on roads, even shutting down highways.

Miami-Dade Police Department Director Stephanie V. Daniels said reckless driving would not be tolerated.

“Participating in such activities will result in police action including, arrests, citations, and your vehicle being impounded,” she said.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including Florida Highway Patrol, will be monitoring roads for violators.

FHP said they have also seen bicyclists attempting to take over roadways, which is illegal.

“Traffic will be monitored in real time,” said FHP Lt. Alex Camacho. “Individuals or groups interfering with motorists will be reported to troopers on patrol.”

Police also sent out a reminder that ATVs and dirt bikes are not allowed on highways, public roads or streets. They are implementing a no tolerance policy.
