The Miami Marlins took a beating today, dropping their matchup with the Oakland Athletics by a score of 20-4 to officially drop the series. 

Here’s what you need to know from the contest: 

Miami’s pitching staff wore this one

Trevor Rogers got the start for Miami, and it just did not work out for the young starter. Rogers was charged with eight runs on eight hits and three walks in just 2.1 innings, getting knocked out in the third inning. He strick out only one while allowing two homers, throwing 78 pitches (44 strikes) in the process. 

Rogers just struggled to miss bats today. He got only three whiffs, all on the fastball, and finished with a paltry 18% CSW. Oakland hitters made contact with 30 of their 33 swings, putting fourteen of those in play and fouling sixteen off. 

Darren McCaughan came in after Rogers and was tasked with giving Miami some length; his ERA will pay the price. McCaughan went 4.2 innings, being charged with eight runs of his own on nine hits and three walks, giving up three homers. 

Corner infielder Emmanuel Rivera pitched the ninth, giving up four runs on four hits (including a homer). 

Where is the offense? 

While it’s not realistic to assume that Miami’s offense could have kept up with a 20-run pace from Oakland, the Marlins offense didn’t come close. Miami hitters picked up only seven hits and four runs, with Bryan De La Cruz (2-4 with a homer and two RBIs) the only player with multiple hits. 

It’s not much, but Nick Fortes’ 6th inning solo homer was the first home run of the season for a Miami catcher, coming in the 35th game of the season. 

Luis Arraez had a great debut for San Diego

To add insult to injury, recently traded second baseman Luis Arraez made his debut for the San Diego Padres tonight. Leading off from the designated hitter spot, he went 4-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. He’s the first Padres player to debut with a four-hit game.

Miami wraps up the series tomorrow afternoon at 4:07 PM, with Sixto Sánchez making his third start in what is expected to be a quasi-bullpen game against righty Joe Boyle. The broadcast can be found on Bally Sports Florida. 

MIAMI — The work of a Super Bowl winning quarterback is never done.

Just a few months after helping the Kansas City Chiefs to their second-straight Super Bowl title, Patrick Mahomes was back in an NFL stadium on Saturday. Only this time not with a helmet on nor to walk into the huddle as a starting quarterback, but rather to visit with other athletes as a team owner.

On a steamy Saturday here in Miami Mahomes returned to Hard Rock Stadium, the site of his first Super Bowl win, to visit with Formula 1 team Alpine. Back in October of 2023, Mahomes was part of a group of athletes — along with teammate Travis Kelce — who joined the ownership group of the F1 team.

“I’ve always had a passion for all sports. The opportunity to lead an investor group with Travis in Alpine F1 alongside Otro Capital was one I couldn’t pass up,” said Mahomes last October. “It’s an exciting time for the sport and this is an opportunity to bring our shared values to the world stage. I’m looking forward to being a part of its growth.”

On Saturday the MVP quarterback was spotted by SB Nation walking into the Alpine hospitality space, alongside his wife Brittany.

Shortly after Mahomes arrived, Alpine notched a victory as F1 Academy driver Abbi Pulling secured a win in the first of two F1 Academy races this weekend. It is Pulling’s second win of the season, but the first time the driver got to enjoy the victory on the podium. In her first win, she was promoted to P1 after the race — and after the podium celebration — following a post-race penalty handed down to Mercedes driver Doriane Pin.

Later in the day Saturday SB Nation saw the quarterback and his wife exit the Alpine hospitality space and make their way out of Hard Rock Stadium. As they departed it appeared the quarterback was pointing to the portion of the Dolphins’ Ring of Honor commemorating the 1972 Miami Dolphins team that finished a perfect 17-0.

Or perhaps he was pointing out a friend in the stands, it was hard to tell from the angle.

Alpine is now hoping that Mahomes can bring a little Hard Rock Stadium magic later today when Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly take to the grid for qualifying for tomorrow’s Miami Grand Prix.

All eyes will be on Chase Stadium this Saturday night when Inter Miami host New York Red Bulls in an MLS clash between two in-form sides.

The Herons have overcome their Concacaf Champions Cup disappointment to beat Sporting Kansas City, Nashville SC and New England Revolution in their last three MLS outings, propelling them to the top of the Eastern Conference standings.

Good form has also followed New York Red Bulls this season, who sit third in the Eastern Conference and just four points behind Miami having played a game less.

Sandro Schwarz’s team are on a three-game winless streak though, following draws against Chicago Fire, LAFC and Vancouver Whitecaps.

Jordi Alba has a hamstring injury and that means his starting spot at left-back should go to Franco Negri.

Serhiy Kryvstov is also ruled out with the same problem, while Miami fans will have to wait a little longer for Federico Redondo to return from a knee injury.

The good news is that Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez are fit and ready to go – a frightening prospect for any defense around the world.

Noah Elle is suspended for Red Bulls after he was sent off last time out against the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Injuries rule Peter Stroud and Serge Ngoma out of contention too, but NYRB have their own star player to look to for inspiration – former Bundesliga star Emil Forsberg, who joined the club in December on a two-year contract with an option for a further 12 months.

One thing’s for sure, goals can be expected at Chase Stadium.

Inter Miami have scored plenty of them with Messi in the team, and there’s been no slowing down former Barcelona teammate Suarez in front of net. The Herons have seen 42 goals fly in over the course of the 11 MLS games they’ve played – conceding has also been a frequent occurance too.

It might not be so easy against a NYRB side who have kept things a little tighter, but the opportunity to hit Miami on the counter could see the game open up pretty quickly. The home team have the quality to win but may come unstuck against a side very difficult to beat.
