What’s the connection between Zemurray Lodge and New Orleans? Curious Louisiana investigates.
Zemurray Lodge and Gardens, a historic property built on 20th century banana wealth, is situated north of Lake Pontchartrain. One reader wants to know its connection with the city of New Orleans.
Sam Zemurray, the money behind the home, is a name well-known in Latin American political history.
“He was considered one of the richest and most powerful people in the United States, a man shrouded with international mystery who overthrew governments, orchestrated coups and had government agreements amended to meet his business needs,” the ANU Museum of the Jewish People website states.

Zemurray, a Russian Jewish immigrant, helped popularize banana consumption across the United States while also exploiting workers and causing far-reaching political instability in Latin America. He got his start selling bananas in Mobile before coming to New Orleans in 1905, where he began expanding companies and consolidating a hold on the fruit market.
He was first the founder of the Cuyamel Fruit Company in New Orleans, then served as president of the United Fruit Company — one of the biggest companies in the world at the time, and one that has a massively influential and controversial history. Today, the company is known as Chiquita Brands International.
One part of his legacy on the city, where he spent large portions of his life, is his mansion at No. 2 Audubon Place, which was donated to Tulane University after his death in 1961.
The home at No. 2 Audubon Place is seen in a photo taken around 1910, just two years after its completion and more than a half century before its red brick exterior was painted a light ivory, as it is today. Built for lumberman William T. Jay, it was for much of the 20th century home to United Fruit President Samuel Zemurray.
Zemurray Lodge and Gardens, near Hammond, was bought by Zemurray in 1928. In his account of banana company history, “Bananas: How the United Fruit Company Shaped the World,” Peter Chapman characterized the home as a place where Zemurray could relax.
“In Louisiana he could walk out through the antebellum columns of his home and stroll around his lake that mirrored the cast-bronze statues at its edge,” Chapman wrote. “Zemurray had a hunting lodge in the pine woods and shot quail.”
The estate’s nomination for the National Register of Historic Places described the history of the place as one of the earliest settled areas in Tangipahoa Parish.

Planter and lawyer Alfred Hennen built the house in 1829, and the property was inherited by his daughter and son-in-law, who sold it to the Lake Superior Piling Company of Chicago in 1918. Company President Charles Houlton, alongside his brother, added interior decoration and colonnades, among other improvements.
When it came into the Zemurray family’s possession, Zemurray’s wife, Sarah, had rows of azaleas and camellias planted along the forest trails. She expanded the gardens and created a two-acre lake, called Mirror Lake. Sarah Zemurray also installed replicas of classical statues.
Under the guidance of New Orleans architect Moise Goldstein, the house’s exterior was covered with stucco, Doric columns were added, and two cottages and stables were installed.

Interior designer George Gallup decorated in the Arts and Craft style — one that focuses on natural materials. The then-popular decorating style turned away from industrialization to emphasize nature-inspired motifs and quality craftsmanship. Inside the lodge, wainscoting, painted foliage and medieval-esque beamed ceilings showcased the trend.
“As far as the State Historic Preservation Office is aware, these interiors represent the most complete and elaborate example of Arts and Crafts interior design to be found in an eight parish area known collectively as the Florida Parishes,” read the National Register of Historic Places nomination form. “ … There is no other example of Arts and Crafts interior design known to the State Historic Preservation Office in the Florida Parishes which is even comparable to Zemurray Lodge.”
The Louisiana Supreme Court on Friday issued a stay of proceedings and recalled a pending arrest warrant against Attorney General (AG) Liz Murrill.
The 5-2 per curiam decision pointed out “disturbing defects” in Orleans Parish Criminal District Court’s procedure, namely the (1) failure to follow the Louisiana Code of Criminal Procedure and administer a grand jury in the public eye by reportedly arresting and removing reporters from the proceedings and (2) the impropriety of special prosecutor Laurie White’s involvement. Laurie White is the former attorney of an interested party against AG Murrill and is currently being represented by the AG’s office as a defendant in a separate sexual harassment suit.
One of the review standards for the court’s decision was whether AG Murrill, in her previous Emergency Motion to stay, made a strong showing that she was likely to succeed. The court found that there was “considerable support” for a positive view of AG Murrill’s chances.
Dissenting Justices C.J. Weimer and J. Guidry argued that the unevaluated allegations by AG Murrill should have precluded the court from intervening and implied that AG Murrill’s title was garnering special treatment. Justice J. Guidry made special note that AG Murrill’s predicament was no different than that of any other accused individual, and that the majority’s action “tilted” the “scales of justice” in her favor.
AG Murrill was indicted on Thursday on 16 felony counts of malfeasance and intimidation for eight letters that she sent to Orleans Parish leaders. The letters were sent on May 13 in response to the Orleans Parish leaders’ and AG Murrill’s diverging interpretations of Act 15, passed by Governor Jeff Landry. The act provides for one elected clerk of the parish of Orleans, effectively consolidating the civil and criminal clerk positions. With the understanding that Act 15 created a new position for the single clerk of Orleans Parish, the mayor encouraged the New Orleans City Council to appoint an interim clerk, Calvin Duncan, and begin a process for a special election. AG Murrill’s letters condemned this action and asserted that Act 15 abolished the criminal clerk’s office, making the previously elected civil clerk, Chelsea Richard Napoleon, the single Orleans Parish clerk. AG Murrill advised the leaders that the actions violated Louisiana’s usurper statutes and would be met with litigation and potential fines or imprisonment.
This threat of litigation was deemed an act of malfeasance and public intimidation. Malfeasance is committed when a public official fails to perform a lawful duty or performs a lawful duty in an unlawful manner. Public intimidation is committed when a person uses “violence, force, extortionate threats, or true threats … with the intent” to influence a public officer’s conduct.
Governor Jeff Landry defended AG Murrill, calling the indictment a “political witch hunt” against AG Murrill, who was “merely upholding the law.” Governor Landry has historically embraced a “tough on crime” approach, which can be seen as contrasting the downsizing of the criminal division. The act took effect just days before the elected Democratic exoneree Calvin Duncan was set to take office. Calvin Duncan was exonerated of a murder conviction in 2021 after evidence revealed police officers had lied about him. In light of this backstory, many Democrats see Act 15 as a political targeting of Democrats and Black officials. Republicans, however, including Governor Jeff Landry, argue that the consolidation will make the “local judicial system more efficient and cut costs.”

Louisiana State Police Detectives Investigating Shreveport Police Department Officer-Involved Shooting

On July 5, 2026, at approximately 4:30 a.m., Detectives with the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations were requested by the Shreveport Police Department to investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred on North Spring Street in Shreveport. Detectives are working to process the scene and gather further information.
Preliminary evidence indicates that officers with the Shreveport Police Department responded to a call for service on North Spring Street. Upon arrival, they encountered an armed subject, and one officer was shot. The armed subject was shot and has been pronounced dead. The officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and no other officers were harmed during the incident. This is an active investigation; further information will be released when it becomes available.

SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) – A reportedly armed man and a police officer have been shot as part of an incident in downtown Shreveport early Sunday morning (July 5).
According to the Shreveport Police Department, officers first responded to a call about a fight around 4:15 a.m. in the alleyway behind the Sand Bar on N Spring Street.
As officers tried to break up the fight, shots were exchanged between a man who was reportedly involved in the fight and officers.
SPD says the man involved pulled out a gun and shot an officer. Then, they say the officer returned fire and shot the man multiple times.
The man was taken to the hospital, and later pronounced dead. The officer is said to have non-life-threatening injuries and was also taken to the hospital for treatment.
The investigation is ongoing, and has been taken over by Louisiana State Police.
