Severe weather could cost Louisiana $2.5B, study says
BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A new study revealed that Louisiana is one of the worst states for natural disasters and that the state’s expected annual loss due to weather and climate events in 2024 is $2.5 billion.
Claimguide.org, a homeowners insurance resource, looked at each state’s number of disaster declarations over the past decade as well as expected annual loss.
The study also looked at key metrics including community resilience, social vulnerability and overall risk for natural disasters, according to the website.
Louisiana was listed among the top states with the most billion-dollar disasters in the last 10 years. According to the study, Louisiana had 44. Texas had the most with 96. The total cost of climate disasters from 2014-2024 in Louisiana was around $100-$200 billion.
Louisiana was ranked as the fourth worst state in the U.S. for natural disasters. The expected annual loss in 2024 for East Baton Rouge Parish is $295 million, the study said.
California claimed the top spot with an expected annual loss of $16 billion in 2024, according to the study.
