The Breeders Sales of Louisiana announced Aug. 7 it has added a mixed session to its yearling sale being held Sept. 28 and put together its largest catalog of offerings since 2021.

The Yearling Sale, conducted by the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association, was moved from its original date so that it now falls between the Keeneland September Yearling Sale and Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Yearling Sale. The hope is to attract nationally-prominent trainers and owners who might have bypassed this sale in favor of the Midlantic sale. The sale is being held at the Equine Sales of Louisiana facility in Opelousas, La.

To further build up the sale, the LTBA board of directors added a mixed session and has attracted a total of 162 yearlings, 41 broodmares, three weanlings, and two horses of racing age.

In the 2022 sale, 138 yearlings were cataloged with 18 withdrawn. Of the 138 head offered, 101 yearlings were sold for a gross of $1,690,600 doubling the 2021 gross of $823,500. The yearling average was $16,739 with a median of $10,000 another significant increase over 2021 average $12,669 and median $8,000. Three weanlings sold for a gross of $20,000, one horse of racing age sold for $7,000, and nine broodmares sold for a gross of $67,800. The gross for the overall sale was $1,785,400.
