Ossoff helps bring funding to prevent youth substance abuse in South Georgia, statewide
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) – Senator Jon Ossoff has announced millions in funding for preventing substance abuse for young people in communities throughout Georgia.
The funding is being provided through a $2.8 million federal grant through the Drug-Free Communities Support Programs (DFC). 20 community programs will be helped by the program.
“Today I’m delivering Federal funding that will empower Georgia communities to keep kids safe from addiction and overdose,” Sen. Ossoff said.
DFC was created in 1997 and provides up to $125,000 per year for five years to community coalitions in order to strengthen infrastructure and cut down on youth substance abuse, according to Ossoff’s office.
Two Georgia communities, Quitman and Hazelhurst, are set to receive funding.
Brooks County Family Connection is set to receive $125,000.
The Jeff Davis Substance Abuse Coalition (JDSAC) is set to receive $114,620.
Other programs in the Atlanta, Savannah and Augusta regions also received funding.

ATLANTA, Ga. — Positive mosquito samples for West Nile virus have been found in Fulton County, according to the Board of Health.
Officials say the samples came from the Grant Park area and that infected mosquitoes are suspected to be present in the city of Atlanta.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report this year’s West Nile infections are the highest since 2004. The disease has been transmitted by mosquitoes, with reported cases in 23 states. Most of the reported cases are considered severe.
Health officials suggest using an insect repellent registered with the EPA. Wearing long, loose-fitting clothing is also recommended.

APPLING COUNTY, Ga. (WCYB) — The co-owner of Yurezz Home Center in Greeneville has been arrested in Georgia, according to a report obtained by News 5.
Earlier this week, News 5 told you about the dealership in Greeneville that abruptly shut down last month.
This has left homeowners with partially built homes and employees without jobs.
It is not yet clear why Richard Altman was taken into custody.
