Georgia Poor People’s Campaign makes a push for new laws, votes ahead of election day
ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Georgians are running out of time to early vote in the 2024 presidential primaries! There’s a new push to get voters out to the polls during the last weekend of early voting.
The Georgia Poor People’s Campaign, a group of lower-wage workers, faith leaders and activists, gathered outside the state capitol tonight demanding lawmakers prioritize policies that can make life easier for low-income earners. It’s part of the group’s “40 Weeks of Action” campaign, an effort to mobilize voters ahead of the November election.
The Poor People’s Campaign said voters with an annual household income of less than $50,000 make up 27% of the electorate in Georgia. Georgia’s Poor People’s Campaign weren’t the only ones assembling Saturday. Several other chapters across different states participated also, outlining their efforts to get out the vote.
Poor People’s Campaign co-chair Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II said, “The Poor People’s Campaign is mobilizing today to wake up the sleeping giant of low-wage voters who have been ignored for far too long. Do not listen to those who say poor and low-wage voters are apathetic about politics or marginal to election outcomes. Poor and low-wage voters have the power to change electoral outcomes up and down the ballot in November. We are putting politicians on notice: if you want our votes, you must legislate to end the crisis of death by poverty in America.”
The effort comes as presidential candidates on both sides of the aisle are making big campaign pushes as the clock ticks closer to primary election day in Georgia.
First lady Jill Biden made a stop in Atlanta Friday to launch ‘Women For Biden and former president Donald Trump made a stop in North Carolina Saturday.
