ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A man who rear-ended an SUV at high speed in 2019, killing its driver, was sentenced Tuesday to 14 years in prison, according to the Office of Orange-Osceola State Attorney Andrew Bain.

Dean Kornblum, 26, of Boca Raton, pleaded guilty in September to the October 2019 crash that killed 36-year-old Angel Dominguez, of Sanford, on University Boulevard near Bibb Lane in Orange County.

Bain’s office stated in a news release that Kornblum was driving at a recorded speed of 142 mph, calling it a contributing factor in the crash. The release added Kornblum’s blood alcohol content level was .189 “moments after” the wreck, more than twice the legal limit in Florida.

Kornblum’s “disturbing statements made when he was taken to the hospital” were another aspect that the judge considered, Bain’s office said in the statement. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Kornblum laughed loudly and obnoxiously while talking to staff members at ORMC, where he had been transported for treatment of minor injuries after the crash. Kornblum’s behavior allegedly included an early dismissal of what would be found in his blood, telling staff “it’s because they put it in his system,” as well as how troopers reportedly overheard him tell someone on the phone that he “didn’t need to sober up because this situation was a joke,” FHP documents state.

Dominguez was father to two girls — 7 years old and 7 months old at the time of the crash — and his family members were present at Kornblum’s sentencing hearing to give impact statements, according to Bain’s office. At sentencing, Kornblum also reportedly admitted to being under the influence of Xanax during the wreck.

Kornblum was found guilty of DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide. His sentence will be followed by one year of community control and 10 years of probation.
