Downtown Dallas to get grocery store again
Dallas will soon get a grocery market again in the heart of downtown — and from a local brand.
Ari’s Pantry, which specializes in Italian products, is planning to open a shop in April on Main and Ervay streets, according to a post on the store’s Instagram account and Ari Lowenstein, who is the owner behind the shops. It’s where Berkley’s Market operated until it closed last year amid a consolidation.
Ari’s Pantry already has shops in Oak Cliff and Trinity Groves in Dallas — and the new store will be the biggest of the three, Lowenstein said.
The new shop will include produce, cheese, meats and pasta, along with wine and beer. There also will be a coffee service area with a barista and a gelato bar. Customers will find options for ready-to-go meals, salads, snacks and panini as well.
The store is a welcome addition to residents of downtown and local shoppers who were left without a key place for getting groceries with the Berkley’s closure. While there are grocery stores such as Whole Foods in nearby areas in Uptown and elsewhere, there’s no traditional shop in the core of the city.
The addition comes as downtown retail faces other challenges elsewhere including the planned shuttering of the iconic Neiman Marcus, a landmark destination for over 100 years.
Downtown needs more grocery options, Lowenstein said, as more people move into the area. At the end of last year, there were more than 10,000 existing and under-construction apartments in the city’s urban center — twice as many as a decade ago, according to CoStar.
The store can serve a real need for people who are nearby the site.
“They can just walk downstairs, or walk down the block, and grab their little red bags of Ari’s Pantry goodies,” Lowenstein said. “I’ve seen enough examples of the two stores that we have, (that I) believe that downtown – it’s going to be very successful.”
Lowenstein noted gifts can be a draw for shoppers as well.
Lowenstein, the proprietor at Ari’s Pantry, opened his first store in Oak Cliff in 2023. The new store is a joint venture between Lowenstein and other investors with interests downtown.
He plans to open new stores in other areas of North Texas in the future as well.

Kyle Connor scored twice and added an assist to lead the Winnipeg Jets to a 4-1 victory over the Dallas Stars on Friday night.
Dylan Samberg and Morgan Barron also scored for Winnipeg, while Mark Scheifele had three assists. Connor Hellebuyck made 24 saves.
Mason Marchment scored for the Stars with 3:49 to play and Jake Oettinger stopped 18 shots.
Winnipeg’s 96 points widened its Western Conference and Central Division lead over the Stars to 10 points. Dallas has two games in hand. The Jets also moved two points ahead of the idle Washington Capitals for top spot in the league.
Samberg scored when his shot went through traffic past Oettinger at 8:01. Connor made it 2-0 with a one-timer that went over Oettinger’s stick with 2:58 left in the frame.
The team’s leading scorer made it 3-0 with his 35th goal of the season at 6:43 of the second.
Barron tipped in a Dylan DeMelo shot at 7:26 of the third to stretch the lead to 4-0.

In a video from The Real Estate Council, Patrick Dumont talked about the Dallas Mavericks’ struggles before last season’s trade deadline. He said the team wasn’t good enough to make the playoffs, so they made big changes to the roster.
Dumont explained, referring to Luka Doncic-Anthony Davis trade, “For us, going into the trade deadline last year, we were not competitive. If you recall, we were not a playoff-bound team, and we were able to do some things to reconstruct the roster and enable the team to become very competitive.”
After the trade, the Mavericks had the best record in the NBA and reached the championship games but didn’t win.
Looking ahead, Dumont said the Mavericks’ progress stopped while other teams kept improving. This led to trading Luka Doncic.
He said, “We looked at our trajectory during the season and realized that we did not get better, but the teams we competed against some of which we beat did get better. So this was a decision about the future.” Dumont believes the current team can still compete with top NBA teams.
Since trading Doncic, the Mavericks have faced issues. Anthony Davis, who joined in the trade, has only played one game due to injury. Kyrie Irving also hurt his left knee (torn ACL) in a game against the Sacramento Kings and is out for the season. These injuries have hurt the team’s performance, making people wonder if the trade was worth it.

Minority owner Mark Cuban is unhappy. He said, “Yeah, of course, I was upset.” He also thinks the team could’ve gotten a better deal:
“No disrespect to Anthony Davis, but I still firmly believe this would be a different conversation if we had gotten four unprotected first-round picks, Anthony Davis, and Max Christie.” Fans and others are unsure if the trade will help the Mavericks in the long run.

A person is dead after being shot early Thursday in east Oak Cliff, according to Dallas police.
Dallas police responded to a call for service at about 3:50 a.m. in the 1500 block of Exeter Avenue, where they found a person had been shot at the location and died.
Police said there is an ongoing investigation, and details remain limited. Law enforcement officials have not identified the victim.
