Travelers looking for a place to stay shouldn’t have a problem finding a hotel room in Dallas.
The Dallas area has more than 21,500 rooms on the way in 184 new hotels – from swanky to budget-conscious. That’s the most in the country, according to a new research report by Lodging Econometrics.
More than 19 North Texas hotels with 2,159 rooms are scheduled to open next year. In 2025, another 23 hotels will debut with 2,343 rooms.
“For the first half of 2023, the U.S. opened 224 new hotels with 27,194 rooms with another 384 new hotels and 48,607 rooms expected to open by year-end,” Lodging Econometrics analysts said in their just-released midyear report. “Reflective of the current pipeline, Lodging Econometrics’ forecast for new hotel openings will continue to rise through 2025.”
Along with the Dallas area, other top U.S. hotel building markets include Atlanta with 141 projects and Phoenix with 119 in the development pipeline.
“Dallas has the most projects scheduled to start in the next 12 months with 69 projects and 8,045 rooms,” according to Lodging Econometrics.
The number of Dallas projects has declined from the first quarter of this year when more than 200 projects were in the works. Tight lending has curtailed some proposed developments.
Along with building new hotels, firms in the Dallas area are also renovating existing properties. Lodging Econometrics is counting 33 North Texas renovation projects with 5,687 rooms.
Dallas-based Omni Hotels & Resorts said this week that it’s planning to spend more than $150 million to upgrade its properties, including its hotel in Las Colinas. The hotel firm also plans to invest a total of $1.5 billion on its portfolio of more than 50 properties over the next five years.
Dallas-Fort Worth has been one of the country’s top hotel building markets for several years. Currently, 13 new hotels with 2,100 rooms are scheduled to open their doors before the end of the year.
Other notable completed, planned or under construction projects include:
- The 267-room JW Marriott Hotel opened its doors last week in downtown Dallas.
- The $520 million Omni PGA Frisco Resort opened in May.
- The 134-room Swexan Hotel opened in Uptown Dallas in June.
- The luxury Crescent Hotel Fort Worth also is expected to open in September in the city’s cultural district.
