OXNARD, Calif. — The first round of the Cowboys’ kicker competition is complete.
Score it a draw.
Tristan Vizcaino and Brandon Aubrey, in that order, alternated field-goal attempts throughout practice Monday. In the opening set, from between 33 and 45 yards in mildly breezy conditions, both players unofficially went 5-of-7. Vizcaino appeared to miss from 33 and 45. Aubrey’s misses were from 43 and 45.
No game official stood beneath the goalpost to rule whether each kick was good.
Later in practice, with the entire team watching and an official standing below the post, Vizcaino and Aubrey converted from 38, 44 and 48 yards. That set occurred during what coach Mike McCarthy, for a third straight camp, calls a “Mojo Moment.” Normal practice flow becomes interrupted for a game situation.
Kicking competition was the situation Monday.
Aubrey, who spent the past two USFL seasons with the Birmingham Stallions, seems to be the favorite of the two kickers. There is little reading into the fact Vizcaino kicked first Monday when turns alternate. Aubrey will have days in the future when he kicks first to balance out their opportunities, McCarthy said.
