Cowboys News: Fired Dallas coach lands college job, Brett Maher works out for AFC team
The Dallas Cowboys made extensive changes to their coaching staff following another earlier-than-expected playoff exit.
Firing Kellen Moore as offensive coordinator was far and away the biggest revision, but Dallas also showed the door to RBs coach Skip Peete, OL coach Joe Philbin, senior defensive assistant George Edwards, and several others.
Though Cowboys fans are squeamish about Moore teaming up with Justin Herbert, it was great to see Moore land on his feet with the Chargers. The quickness in which Moore was hired after his dismissal shows how high he’s regarded around the league.
The same can be said about Peete, who took the same position with the Buccaneers.
While some of Dallas’ former coaches are still looking for work, fans can cross Philbin off the list after he was hired by Ohio State as an offensive analyst.
The rich continue to get richer in Columbus.
Ohio State’s offense loses a handful of players to the draft seemingly every year and yet they perennially have one of the best offenses in the country under head coach Ryan Day.
While the Buckeyes’ lost starting quarterback C.J. Stroud, offensive line arguably is the bigger question for Day and company this offseason after tackles Paris Johnson (the sixth overall pick) and Dawand Jones, as well as center Luke Wypler all got drafted.
Philbin’s ample experience overseeing offensive lines at the pro and college level should help Ohio State overcome this transition period. It’s a home run hire for the Buckeyes and we wish Philbin nothing but success in Columbus.
In other Cowboys news, former kicker Brett Maher worked out for the Broncos on Wednesday, according to multiple reports.
Maher’s workout was reported shortly after Denver released longtime kicker Brandon McManus with a post-June 1 designation.
The entirety of Cowboys Nation is clamoring for Dallas to sign McManus, who’s long been one of the game’s most consistent kickers. That’s no longer a possibility after the Jaguars signed McManus on Thursday.
This is great for Maher, who deserves another crack at a starting job after he converted on 90.6% of his field goals and 94.3% of his extra points during the regular season in 2022. He was one of the top kickers in the sport, but all that work was swiftly erased after he set an NFL record with four missed extra points in the playoff win vs the Buccaneers.
He followed that with a blocked PAT against the 49ers in the second round on a kick that was headed nowhere near the uprights.
Stay tuned if Maher and the Broncos reach an agreement.
