Big plays propel Dallas Christian to third consecutive state title in win over Holy Cross

WACO – Dallas Christian got two touchdowns apiece from quarterback Luke Carney and tailback Jaden Davis, helping Dallas Christian claim back-to-back TAPPS Division III titles in a 28-13 victory over San Antonio Holy Cross at Waco ISD Stadium. With a TAPPS Division II title in 2021, this is Dallas Christian’s third consecutive state title win.

Big plays sparked the Dallas Christian offense in the first half, including a 50-yard touchdown run by Jaden Davis on the team’s first play for an early 7-0 lead.

That lead stayed intact into the second quarter, with the Dallas Christian defense coming up with a key stop inside its 10-yard line that led to a missed field goal try by Holy Cross.

Dallas Christian (13-1) then built on its lead on the ensuing drive, as Luke Carney hit William Nettles for a 63-yard touchdown strike for a 14-0 lead with 7:20 left in the opening half.

SA Holy Cross (10-3) finally found end zone late in the half thanks to a 16-play, 63-yard drive, cutting the deficit to 14-7 on a 13-yard run by Taylor Flores with 19 seconds left in the half.

Dallas Christian increased its lead to 21-7 early in the third quarter, as Carney found Decorias Taylor on a 35-yard scoring play.

That lead stayed in place until midway through the fourth quarter, as SA Holy Cross drove 80 yards in eight plays to score on a 1-yard run by AJ Williams. A missed extra point kept the Dallas Christian lead at 21-13 with 5:16 left to play.

Dallas Christian then put the game away with an 8-play, 50-yard scoring drive, capped by a 7-yard run by Davis with 1:40 remaining for a 28-13 edge.
