One person detained after allegedly setting items on fire in Downtown Austin hi-rise unit

One person is in custody after allegedly starting a fire in a Downtown Austin hi-rise apartment unit on Sunday.

The Austin Fire Department responded at 8:46 a.m. to reports of a person who reportedly set items on fire on the 23rd floor of The Quincy apartments located at 91 Red River Street.

AFD officials said the fire was controlled by the sprinkler system by the time they arrived. Crews worked to mitigate the smoke and water that filled the apartment unit.

Austin police detained the subject and is being interrogated by Fire Investigators.

At 9:01 a.m., fire officials put out the fire but additional fire trucks were called to the scene to assist with removing the water that migrated into the floors below.

It’s unclear if the subject was arrested or facing charges and the cost of damages caused by the fire and water.
