No injuries reported after explosion at St. David’s hospital parking garage: APD
AUSTIN, Texas – Austin police responded to a bomb hotshot call at St. David’s Hospital in central Austin Wednesday evening.
Around 5:23 p.m. on Wednesday, August 9, APD responded to a car fire that was happening in the visitor’s parking garage at St. David’s Medical Center in the 900 block of East 32nd Street.
When firefighters arrived, they suspected this was not a normal car fire, and that there was something suspicious about the incident. They believed the fire started due to an explosion.
APD and the bomb squad responded shortly after and are investigating the explosion. They are investigating if this was an accident or an intentional act.
Austin police were able to identify a person connected to the vehicle, and he was detained. Officials said he is cooperating with the investigation.
Due to the explosion, and increased police presence because of the investigation, the St. David’s emergency room is not accepting any patients at this time.
The hospital has closed the garage temporarily. No injuries were reported.
Officers are still on the scene as the investigation continues.
Authorities advise drivers to expect delays around the hospital.
