Kirk Watson, Walt Maddox bet barbecue for Texas vs. Alabama
On Thursday, September 7, Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox and Austin Mayor Kirk Watson made a friendly wager. The winner gets barbecue from the other’s city. In a video posted to Twitter, which you may have heard is now called X, Maddox said that he would send Dreamland BBQ to Austin.
Watson, the once-and-current mayor, did some light taunting of his own, appearing on campus with what he called his security detail: UT’s costumed mascot Hook ’Em.

“Hey, Mayor @WaltMaddox, game on,” the Austin mayor wrote, including the Sign of the Horns emoji. “I’m sorry you won’t be able to enjoy some award-winning Micklethwait @CraftMeats, but I sure do look forward to trying some Dreamland BBQ after @TexasFootball beats Bama Saturday night. A fun game between two great teams!”
Watson is right in his lamenting that, should Texas win, he would not be able to spread the gospel of Micklethwait Craft Meats, the vaunted barbecue joint that recently celebrated its 10th anniversary.
Of course, Texas will have to beat Alabama on the road on Saturday, lest the mayor’s staff get the dry ice ready. Alabama is currently favored by a touchdown on most betting sites.
