AUSTIN, Texas — The former Texas Longhorns and Kansas City Chiefs all-pro linebacker, Derrick Johnson and his Defend the Dream Foundation worked alongside the Kendra Scott Foundation to transform another library at the Pickle Elementary School.
CBS’s Melanie Torre was the MC at the unveiling of the 3rd Austin-area Discovery Den.
The library features a multi-functional space for students to read and learn along with over 1,000 new books by Defend the Dream.

Derrick’s Defend the Dream Foundation helps low-income and inner-city children with opportunities and resources to reach their full potential in school.
“But it’s pretty cool to come into a library and let them know ‘Hey education is pretty important, making grades is pretty important, reading– literacy is very important, being able to stay out of trouble is very important, working hard is very important’ so being able to mentor them in that space is awesome and this is what I’m called to do,” said Johnson.
Derrick spent some time reading new books to children at Pickle Elementary and answering their questions.
