AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Next time you go to the Augusta sculpture trail, you will see ten new sculptures around the trail.

The city of Augusta and the Greater Augusta Arts Council are celebrating the new artwork during a ribbon-cutting Friday.

Each sculpture is created by local, regional and national artists.

The Greater Augusta Arts Council created the trail in 2020 with funding from the city of Augusta.

They created it to give visitors and neighbors a way to experience public art outdoors and bring people together.

“Public art actually starts conversations, it beautifies communities, it helps keep crime down because if we make the area beautiful. People are more likely to enjoy it than they are to destroy it, so it’s just extremely important that we have more beautiful things to look at in our city,” said Denise Tucker, executive director, Greater Augusta Arts Council.

There are 18 total sculptures along the trail on 15th Street in the Augusta Common.

Things that bring their communities, children, when we have arts in the heart, people specifically come to the riverwalk just to see what’s installed. Every artist wants to see the riverwalk, somewhere where people are enjoying it and interpreting it, so it’s always positive,” said Tucker.
