Richmond County garbage rates to go up for consideration
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – A plan to change garbage collection rates is moving forward, with the Augusta Commission set to vote on it at next week’s meeting.
The proposal for a rate of $21.86 a month was forwarded to the full commission during a meeting of commission members at the committee level on Tuesday.
This would be a countywide rate and an effort to consolidate the zones under which garbage service is now provided.
“We want zones 1, 2, and 3 to be consolidated and with the same service at the same time with the same cost, that way everyone is on the same sheet of music,” said Commissioner Alvin Mason.
On Tuesday, commissioners were set to see a presentation by garbage service contractor Coastal, but then legal and procurement officials said it would be inappropriate to give one vendor an edge over another, so the presentation was canceled.
Also Tuesday, commissioners saw a presentation from Dr. Donna Marain on the backlog of inmates at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center.
Marain claims a portion of the inmates in that backlog are waiting for their court dates.
Commissioners have tasked the city administrator’s office, Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and court system with meeting together to coordinate an effort to reduce the inmate population.
Commissioner Francine Scott missed the meeting because of a fire near her home. The blaze damaged a house in the 1300 block of Wrightsboro Road.
