AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – One man is in critical condition after a shooting early Saturday morning in Downtown Augusta, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials say deputies in the area on foot patrol responded to the 900 block of Broad Street just after 2 a.m. as the bars and nightclubs were closing due to the downtown safety proactive plan implemented by Sheriff Eugene Brantley, which includes having two deputies assigned to each block of Broad Street on weekend nights.

Downtown Augusta safety top of mind as summer nears

The sheriff’s office says more foot traffic is welcome downtown. After all, that’s what keeps downtown alive. However, they say heading into the summer time, with more people out, they are prepared for anything.

When deputies arrived, they say they found a 61-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

Investigators say they believe the shooting was a targeted incident.

Two suspects, a male and a female, were quickly apprehended in the immediate area and a firearm was found with one of the suspects, according to officials.

Both suspects were turned over to the Criminal Investigations Division.

Authorities say both suspects will be charged with Aggravated Assault and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime.
