Jim Dent, trailblazing Black golfer and Augusta native, dies at 85

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Jim Dent died at age 85 on May 2, according to the PGA Tour.

Dent grew up in Augusta and attended Laney High School, and was one of the best Black Golfers of his time.

Dent was recovering from a stroke, however, he attended the Masters three weeks before his death, observing the 50th anniversary of Lee Elder becoming the first black Masters player, according to the PGA Tour.

He was a member of the African-American Golfers Hall of Fame, and the city of Augusta renamed the road leading to the Patch Jim Dent Way in 2020.

He appeared in the PGA Championship six times.

Dent caddied the Masters before he turned pro.
