Harlem’s Jimmie Lewis wins 900th career win in baseball
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Harlem High School’s Head Baseball Coach Jimmie Lewis is one of the all-time greats to ever coach in the CSRA.
You can talk about Terry Holder and Gerald Barnes. But you can’t not talk about Lewis.
And he gave us all a good reminder of why with another career win.
Harlem baseball had a doubleheader against Howard in Bulldog Country on Friday.
They won game one.
That put the ball coach at 899 career wins.
In game two, the Dawgs were stuck on 11 runs in the second inning, and Howard was scoreless.
In the GHSA ruling, 15 after three is a run rule.
They just missed out on the magic number in the third inning. So, they tried again in the fourth.
They succeeded and Lewis won number 900.
“I thought that’d be pretty cool to put my grandson on third. I mean we’re up 14 to nothing and all we got to do is score one run. So, I said let’s put him on there and it’ll be a Lewis scoring the winning run in the 900th game. So, you know a little selfish so to speak but hey 49 years maybe I deserve that one little moment,” said Lewis.
He is the second-winningest coach among active coaches.
He is fourth all-time — 56 wins away from Gerald Barnes.
