Florence man beats up mom after being upset over her cooking, warrants allege

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – A disagreement over dinner led a Florence man to beat up his mother, according to arrest warrants.

The Florence Police Department charged 35-year-old Justin McWhite on Monday with attempted murder.

Officers responded Sunday to the 1200 block of Diggs Avenue in Florence for an assault.

McWhite’s sister told the investigators that McWhite was upset with his mother cooking two meats for dinner, according to the arrest warrants.

The sister heard screaming and ran to her mother’s bedroom and saw McWhite with one hand on the mother’s throat and the other punching her, the warrants state.

She tried to get McWhite off their mother, but McWhite continued to beat her, the arrest documents state.

Eventually, police said McWhite left the home, and deputies with the Florence County Sheriff’s Office arrested him on Monday.

The mother was taken to a hospital in Florence and then taken to MUSC in Charleston for more specialized care, according to the police department.

McWhite is booked at the Florence County Detention Center.
