Diamond Lakes ball fields named for former commissioner
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – A local baseball park is set to be renamed in honor of a former Augusta commissioner, according to city officials.
On Wednesday, the Diamond Lakes Regional Parks baseball field will be officially renamed the Fred Ancil “Andy” Cheek III Ball Fields.
The renaming ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m. at 4335 Windsor Spring Road, Diamond Lakes Regional Park.
Cheek served as Augusta-Richmond County commissioner of District 6 from 2000 to 2007. He died in 2023.
City officials say Cheek was a dedicated advocate for youth sports and community development.
“Andy Cheek believed in the power of sports to shape young lives,” said Tameka Allen, city administrator. “His vision and leadership helped create opportunities for thousands of children to learn, grow, and thrive on and off the field. This renaming ensures his influence will be remembered for generations to come.”
The newly named field will continue to serve as a hub for youth leagues, tournaments, and community events, according to city officials.
The renaming ceremony will also feature remarks from local officials, family members, and community leaders.
City officials say a commemorative plaque will also be unveiled at the field.
