Augusta hospitals welcome a pair of New Year’s babies


AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – The start of the new year means a lot for many different people – New Year’s resolutions, going after new goals, and for some families and welcoming a new baby into the family.

Augusta has at least two New Year’s babies for 2024 – one born at Doctors Hospital and one born at Wellstar MCG Hospital.

At Doctors, Isis Aleya Roper was born at 2:04 a.m. Monday. She weighs 7 pounds 1 ounce and is 20.5 inches long.

At Wellstar MCG, the first baby of 2024 was born at 8:17 a.m. A girl, she’s named Lydia Moon and weighs 5 pounds 14 ounces. She’s 18.5 inches long.

Motorcyclist suffers life-threatening injuries in Augusta crash


AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -A motorcyclist was badly injured following a crash Sunday morning, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the scene of the accident at the intersection of Willis Foreman Road and Ulm Road around 10:37 a.m.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a hit-and-run on Oak Street. According to deputies, the accident happened Saturday at 4:31 p.m. on the 400 block of Oak Street.

A car was heading east on Willis Foreman Road and was trying to turn left onto Ulm Road when a motorcycle going west on Willis Foreman Road collided with the car as it made the left turn, officials said.

The driver of the motorcycle was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the crash.

Augusta man dies after shooting on 10th Street


AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) — A late-night shooting in Augusta has turned deadly.

Richmond County deputies were called to the 1300 block of 10th Street just before 11 p.m. Friday. Investigators say several men were sitting on a porch when someone opened fire.

The victim, identified as 24-year-old Heavaugh Leigene Brooks, was taken to the hospital by a private car before deputies arrived. He died from his injuries early Saturday morning.

Deputies found a firearm and shell casings at the scene. The investigation is now being treated as a homicide. No suspects have been released.

Augusta mayor continues sweet potato giveaway as Thanksgiving approaches


AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Mayor Garnett Johnson is in the mood for the Thanksgiving food giveaway, and we were with him in South Augusta.

At his headquarters in Hephzibah on Friday, he continued his sweet potato giveaway.

If you missed it, do not worry, Johnson has another giveaway on Saturday.

Johnson spoke about what inspired him to specifically give away sweet potatoes.

“There’s a lot of turkeys that are being given away, but I realize that, you know, oftentimes, people forget about the size. Every household is going to either have some yams or a sweet potato pie, or a sweet potato casserole,” said Johnson. “It’s more about bringing families together.”

Saturday’s giveaway is at Ever Faithful Missionary Baptist Church from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
