Augusta Furies continue to grow ahead of fall season

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – This time last year, the Augusta Furies Women’s Rugby team had just enough players to field their 15s squad.

They spent this summer figuring out ways to fill their roster to combat last year’s problem, but then the Olympics happened.

“It was hard because we were really like, we have to recruit,” said Head Coach Hannah Price. “We need to get the name out there.”

The U.S. women’s rugby team did it for them, winning bronze in rugby sevens.

“We were anticipating some, but I don’t think we were anticipating having 30-plus people at our first practice back,” said Jessica Bacon, forward for the Augusta Furies.

They have a full roster now, which will come in handy as they begin fall 15s, where there are no rolling subs.

“They are really advocating for a sport and for being a strong athlete, and women don’t have to be in dainty sports anymore,” said Price. “It’s like, ‘This is what we like, and this is what we like to do, and we have the bodies to do it, and we are still beautiful.’”

Bacon said: “Anybody can get out here and learn the game, and there’s a role for you on this team, whether you’re fast or slow or, you know, I’m not as strong. We’ve got a spot for you,”

This season the Furies celebrate their 25th anniversary — a benchmark for the next 75.
