Armed SWAT standoff ends with arrest in south Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – The Richmond County SWAT team is on scene at Mike Padgett Highway and Wylie Drive with an armed barricaded person, deputies said Tuesday afternoon.

The incident happened sometime before 3:07 p.m., and continued as late as 4.

Wylie Drive was shut down in both directions, and deputies said to avoid the area.

The SWAT team had a bomb disposal unit and a robot on the scene to help deal with the situation.

Around 3:30 p.m., two people crossed the street with dogs – one being carried and one on a leash – as officers kept their guns trained on some target beyond them.

Around 4 p.m., officers appeared to have a man in custody. Wearing a red ball cap, a white man who appeared to be in his 20s was handcuffed and placed in the back of a police cruiser.

Deputies confirmed the incident had ended with the release of two females safely and the suspect in custody.
