AUGUSTA, Ga. (WFXG) – In Tuesday’s special called meeting of the Augusta commission, Mayor Garnett Johnson extended words of congratulations to the state champion Aquinas High School girls’ soccer team.

The Fighting Irish went undefeated in its championship season, winning the state title on May 2nd against Towns County in a 5-2 overtime finish.

On its way to the program’s first state championship, the Irish took a first-round bye before shutting out three playoff opponents with a combined score of 26-0 in those games.

The team and coaches accepted an invitation from Mayor Johnson to be presented before the commission. The team was honored by a proclamation from the city naming May 2nd Aquinas High School Girls Soccer Day in Augusta.

In its previous season, the team did not win a single victory. Many of the same athletes returned to the field to contribute to the perfect 14-0 record this year.
