66-year-old ID’d after hit, killed by train on Washington Road
MARTINEZ, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – A 66-year-old Grovetown man has been identified after he was hit and killed by a train on Washington Road at Baston Road in Columbia County on Thursday.
On Friday morning, authorities confirmed that the victim of the accident is Dwayne Reindeaux Carter.
Columbia County Sheriff’s Office says Carter was crossing the tracks, to go around the railroad gates when he was hit by a CSX train.
Officials say they have no reason to believe he was doing this on purpose, and is believed to be an accident.
Crews were on the scene for at least four hours.
Columbia County dispatch says Old Evans Crossing and Hightower Drive were also blocked until around 8 p.m.
“I could see people down the block. That way sitting on the corner by the yield sign. They were looking out pointing, and they had their phone out trying to zoom in so they didn’t have to get closer to a scene,” said Dominic Bryant, Circle K employee.
Witnesses say the bicyclist fell off of his bike crossing the tracks when he was hit.
“This kind of got out of control really quick. There was a lot of emotions flowing around,” he said.
The train sat for hours blocking intersections spanning from Baston Road to Old Evans Crossing and Hightower Drive.
“There are a lot of neighborhoods really close by, and a lot of people come and walk to the store. They get what they need. They sit around and talk for a minute. It’s a pretty, somewhat tight-knit community. It was honestly just really a tragedy. It shouldn’t have happened,” said Bryant.
