Hello all. It’s me, Michelle Paul, your host of the Augusta Patch newsletter — here to explain all the most important things happening in town these days.

But first, your local weather:

  • Thursday: Cloudy with a few showers. High: 68 Low: 60.
  • Friday: Areas of low clouds; warmer. High: 78 Low: 64.

Interested in reaching our local readers with targeted messaging that drives traffic to your business? I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our readers to local businesses they need to know. If that’s you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.

Here are the top three stories today in Augusta:

  1. As of 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, the City of Augusta began to experience either a computer or network outage. The city released a statement warning residents that the outage may affect telephone and email communications. It affects any services requiring internet service. According to city spokeswoman Leandra Collins, the outage is not a cyber attack. The cause is being investigated. (WRDW)
  2. Be sure not to miss the first-ever Wiener Fest in Augusta this weekend! Frankly, it should be a hit. The festival will begin at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Savannah River Brewing. Though registration for the hot dog eating contest has closed, those interested are still welcome to come and watch. Half a dozen restaurants in the community will be making hot dogs for the event, and you may just see Scott Russell, the event organizer, walking around town in a hot dog suit this week to promote the festival. (WRDW)
  3. To increase access to jobs for more Americans and simultaneously help with the energy crisis, the Biden administration announced it will invest in workforce hubs throughout the country to help train workers. One of the hubs will be in Augusta. The government plans to partner with local and state officials to help recruit a diverse set of skilled workers. To find out more about the plan, you can visit the government’s webpage. (WFXG)

Today and tomorrow in Augusta:

  • Paint, Sip, & Sushi At Solé Augusta (6:30 PM)

From my notebook:

  • Those who need to apply for or renew State of Georgia Benefits can now use the self-serve kiosk at the Augusta Library. The kiosk is located just outside of the Children’s Department. It is first-come, first-serve, and available whenever the library is open. (Augusta-Richmond County Public Library via Facebook)
  • This year’s Augusta on Display event will be held on Jun. 3 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Julian Smith Casino. The annual event allows community members to meet and engage with city leaders and give feedback on the municipality’s proposed budget. The event is free and will include entertainment, health screenings, and more. (Augusta, Georgia Government via Facebook)
  • If you’ve ever wanted to start your own garden, now is your chance! The Friedman Branch Library will host a Benefits of Gardening workshop on Thursday, May 25 at 10:00 a.m. where attendees will learn the benefits of creating a home garden and how to start one. Registration is required and can be done by calling the library. (Augusta-Richmond County Public Library System)

You’re all caught up for today. See you all soon for another update!
