Ground stops issued for East Coast flights heading to Hartsfield-Jackson airport, FAA reports

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Flights that were expected to come into Atlanta from the East Coast have either been canceled or delayed due to ground stops being called, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
FAA is reporting that ground stops were issued around 10:35 a.m. for flights scheduled to leave from the most east coast-area airports to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
According to the FAA, arrivals have temporarily slowed down due to a runway equipment issue. Technicians are reportedly working to fix the issue.
As of 11 a.m., the FAA reports that three flights into and out of Atlanta have been canceled, and 199 flights have been delayed.
Already airborne flights are actively landing, and flights are taking off from the airport, according to the report.
The FAA says ground stops are expected to last until noon. To find real-time delay information, click here.

Fire score late to beat Atlanta for first home victory of season

Hugo Cuypers scored on a first-half penalty kick and Rominigue Kouamé delivered the winner late in the second half as the Fire won at Soldier Field for the first time this season with a 2-1 victory over Atlanta United on Saturday.
Kouamé scored in the 86th minute after subbing in for Sergio Oregel in the 81st. It was his second goal in his sixth career appearance. The Fire (4-4-4) had gone 0-4-1 through its first five matches at home.
Atlanta United (2-6-4) never found the net but an own goal by Chicago defender Sam Rogers tied it at 1-all in the 80th minute.
Cuypers scored on a penalty kick in the 14th minute and the Fire took a 1-0 lead into halftime. The PK was awarded after a foul on Atlanta United midfielder Alexey Miranchuk.
Jeff Gal made his first career start and finished with two saves in goal for the Fire. Gal made his league debut last week after starter Chris Brady was sent off with a red card in the 36th minute of a scoreless draw with Orlando City.
Brad Guzan saved six shots for Atlanta United. Guzan had two saves and Gal one in the first half.
Atlanta United leads the all-time series 8-5-3 but has never won at Soldier Field. The club has a minus-9 goal differential and hasn’t won on the road this season.
Maren Haile-Selassie had been the only current Chicago player with a goal against Atlanta. He subbed into the match in the 81st minute and notched his second assist this season on the winner, while 21-year-old forward Omari Glasgow collected his first in his 13th career appearance after also entering with Haile-Selassie.
Atlanta United returns home to play the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday. The Fire travel to play Charlotte FC on Saturday.

Gary Bettman Speaks Favorably of Atlanta NHL Return As Expansion Speculation Swirls

Twice in its long history, the NHL has taken a crack at putting a team in Atlanta.
First came the Atlanta Flames in 1973, playing at the Omni Coliseum. Attendance was a challenge, and the team bolted for Calgary after eight seasons. The Atlanta Thrashers, too, fled north to Winnipeg after a 12-year stay from 2000 to ’11.
Will this discourage hockey from future forays into the Peach State? Apparently not, as NHL commissioner Gary Bettman spoke glowingly of Atlanta’s future expansion chances Friday.
“It’s a different place than when the Flames and the Thrashers left, in terms of how big the city is, how robust it is, the sporting interest,” Bettman said Friday in Sunrise, Fla. via Luke Fox of Sportsnet.
Atlanta has indeed grown over the last 15 years or so; the city’s former reputation as a stagnant sports town has also tapered off. The question is whether Atlanta’s new residents will embrace hockey; at least two potential ownership groups are betting it will.
“When somebody wants to make the case and come in and puts together all the pieces, we’ll listen to it,” Bettman said of hypothetical Atlanta expansion pitches. “And if it makes sense, I’ll take it to the executive committee, and then the (Board of Governors).”
