Prediction and betting odds for Jan. 28, Houston Rockets at Atlanta Hawks
In a makeup of a postponement from earlier this month, Jalen Green and the Rockets (-6.5) are in Atlanta to face an injury ravaged Hawks team. For both teams, it’s night two of a split back-to-back.
Seventeen days later than originally planned, the Houston Rockets will make their lone visit of the 2024-25 NBA season to Atlanta on Tuesday night.
The original Jan. 11 date was postponed due to winter weather in the Atlanta area. Since the Rockets and Hawks are in different conferences, they play only twice per season (once in each city).
Because this game was a late addition to the schedule, both teams will be navigating back-to-back considerations — and with travel in-between. Atlanta played at Minnesota on Monday night, while Houston was at Boston.
Due in large part to widespread injuries throughout their roster, the Hawks (22-24) have lost five straight games while falling to No. 9 in the Eastern Conference standings. The Rockets (31-14) remain No. 2 in the West after Monday’s thrilling road victory over the Celtics.
Projected Lineups, Broadcast Info
Rockets at Hawks Betting Odds:
All NBA Odds via BetMGM:
- Point spread: Rockets -6.5
- Money line: Rockets -225 / Hawks +185
- Over-under: 226.5
Rockets at Hawks Injury Updates:
- Rockets: Jabari Smith Jr., out, left metacarpal fracture
- Rockets: Tari Eason, out, left lower leg injury management
- Rockets: Cam Whitmore, questionable, illness
- Hawks: Jalen Johnson, out, left shoulder injury
- Hawks: Trae Young, questionable, right hamstring tightness
- Hawks: Kobe Bufkin, out, right shoulder surgery
- Hawks: Cody Zeller, out, not with team
After his recent return from a lengthy injury, Eason’s absence is due to the team being cautious on back-to-backs for the time being.
Prediction and Picks for Rockets at Hawks:
It’s night two of a road back-to-back for both teams, but the Hawks have significantly more injury concerns and less roster depth in general. That could lead to a good night for the road favorites.
With both teams likely fatigued and not defending with their usual energy , that could make the over a tempting bet. Athletic players who attack the rim — such as Jalen Green, who fared extremely well in Houston’s lone visit to Atlanta last season — could benefit.
Green, Alperen Sengun, and Fred VanVleet are Houston’s three leading scorers, but they combined for only 30 points a night earlier in Boston. (Amen Thompson and Dillon Brooks did the heavy lifting.) That might give Houston’s top scorers a bit more juice on night two of a road back-to-back than they would otherwise have.
Best Bet: Rockets -6.5 (-102)
Favorite Prop: Jalen Green, over 22.5 points (-120)
Prediction: 118-110, Rockets

Metro Atlanta officials try to ease doubts after ICE arrests stoke fear in immigrant communities
ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Officials in some of Metro Atlanta’s most diverse communities are trying to ease uncertainty following recent arrests by U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) in the metro.
Buford Highway is home to restaurants and shops owned or employed by hundreds of immigrants.
“All the cultures on this highway, I even drive down here to get emissions test, I do all kinds of things on Buford we shop at some of the local little stores,” said Anne Jones.
The area was the target of ICE operations with officers seen in Chamblee and Brookhaven.
“I’m hearing stories of people afraid of going out eating or going out to stores and I’m even hearing some reports of some kids not showing up to school. It’s very concerning,” said Brookhaven Mayor John Park.
Park says they were not involved or notified about the arrests. He says he’s worried the recent events will have devastating effects on their relationship with the immigrant community.
“My concern they will group us to all the other agencies, and we will have to work harder to re-establish that trust,” Park said.
Javier Diaz de Leon, Consulate General of Mexico in Atlanta, said the arrests are not random.
“We have not seen any evidence that a widespread raid is happening. What is going on is focused operations that the immigration authorities in this region are going for the detention for specifics individuals that have a process or there’s a deportation order. Nothing like widespread operations,” he said.
People like De Leon and Park are trying to alleviate ongoing fear.
“There’s a lot of uncertainty. There’s a lot of concern,” said Park.
Park says the City of Brookhaven must and will comply with state and government laws but are trying to help the immigrant community regain a sense of belonging.
“We are Brookhaven. We are strong and we are together,” he said.

High-speed chase in Fayette County, 3 arrested
FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga. – Three men are under arrest in Fayette County after a late-night car chase through a neighborhood.
One of the men is accused of opening fire on deputies.
High-speed chase in Fayette County
The backstory:
Fayette County Sheriff Barry Babb says a handgun taken from the men has been linked to other shootings in metro Atlanta. Babb says deputies were called late at night to a gated community where a builder had supplies under surveillance from security cameras. The sheriff says the contractor was concerned that a carload of men was acting suspiciously.
Timeline:
When deputies arrived, they said the pickup they were looking for took off and sped through the neighborhood.
The chase ended because of a flat tire in a field. One gun was tossed out, and the other was hidden under the vehicle. A man who ran away is accused of firing a shot at pursuing deputies.
3 charged in late-night car chase
What we know:
Deputies arrested Denario Piece, 30, of Decatur, and Quentavies Brown, 31, of Riverdale, at the scene. They say both men are convicted felons on probation or parole. Deputies charged them with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, and loitering and prowling.
The third man, the one who deputies say ran away, was later identified by investigators and was arrested in Clayton County. Brian Garland, 33, of Riverdale, is also charged with two counts of aggravated assault on law enforcement officers for shooting at them while running away. They say the Glock semi-automatic handgun found at the scene was tested and confirmed to match evidence from other crimes.
What we don’t know:
Their next court appearance is pending.
It was not immediately clear if they had retained legal representation.
The investigation is continuing, and the men could be facing additional charges in other jurisdictions.
The Source: FOX 5’s Doug Evans spoke with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and obtained police video of the incident for this story.
