Nick Saban: No, Alabama football isn’t considering a 2-QB system in 2023
The uncertainty of Alabama football’s starting quarterback position won’t be answered until the night of Sept. 2 when the Tide offense takes the field against Middle Tennessee State.
Even then, one of Tyler Buchner, Ty Simpson or Jalen Milroe debuting wouldn’t necessarily determine he’s the guy.
In a competition Nick Saban said will still be ongoing, multiple throwers could get looks before Alabama settles on one. But could a two-quarterback system be a potential solution long-term?
“I haven’t even thought about it to be honest with you,” Saban said during his mid-week press conference.
Saban initially misheard a reporter’s question about the varying skillsets “behind center” a term referencing quarterbacks. Once the confusion subsided though, Saban doubled down on why it’s likely a singular signal caller for the Tide.
“We’re trying to develop all of our quarterbacks right now so that’s not something that we’ve talked about to this point. If we think it’s going to help us win down the road, then we’ll certainly consider it,” Saban said.
Wednesday was the first day Alabama football practiced in pads. The entire roster will sort itself out partially through two scrimmages, the first of which will be this Saturday afternoon at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
“Sometimes guys that are talented — it’s more challenging for them to develop the right mindset because they haven’t had to do those things all of the time. But I think they realize the importance of it — I think there [were] a lot of lessons learned from last year as well as every day that we’ve been pointing out in practice where we could’ve eliminated this if we had better communication, or better focus, or better eye control or discipline and eye control — whatever it may be. We’re going to continue to harp on those things and hopefully one day everyone will get it,” Saban said.
