Mark Ingram implores Alabama to 'clean it up' after USF game

Alabama Keys to a Win Over Wisconsin

It wasn’t easy, but Alabama started the Kalen DeBoer Era with a 2-0 record after a victory over USF. The Crimson Tide struggled with penalties and turnovers before catching fire in the fourth quarter, and FOX analyst Mark Ingram said they need to “clean it up.”

In total, Alabama had 13 penalties for 120 yards in the 42-16 win over USF. The Crimson Tide also had three turnovers, including a fumble that set up a Bulls touchdown drive, before ending the game with four straight touchdown drives.

Ingram said the penalties, along with three turnovers, can’t happen again. Considering the matchup with Wisconsin on Saturday, he said it won’t get easier for DeBoer’s group going forward.

“Clean it up,” Ingram said on a pre-recorded halftime show during Arizona vs. Kansas State. “They’ve got to clean it up, man. Thirteen penalties for 120 yards, took three touchdowns off the board. Before you learn how to win, you must learn what keeps you from getting beat.

“And turning the ball over, having penalties will get you beat – especially in this rugged schedule that they have. So they had three turnovers lost. Talked to Coach DeBoer this week and that’s been the point of emphasis all week long. Take care of the football on offense and turn the ball over on defense. That will be a challenge for Alabama tomorrow.”

Both running games were on full display in Week 2. Jam Miller led the way for Alabama with 140 yards and a touchdown while Justice Haynes also ran one in to go with 46 yards. Jalen Milroe also threw for two touchdowns while also totaling 194 passing yards. However, three different players – Miller, Milroe and Kendrick Law – lost fumbles in the effort.

After the game, DeBoer said ball security is a point of emphasis during weekly prep. He said that will continue to be the case.

“Every day, there’s something, but Tuesdays are a big-time priority,” DeBoer said. “We start to week off with that. There’s other things. We talk about the ball is the program and how important it is taking care of it and also getting it. And so really, we won’t have to raise the level of how much we stress it because we stress it significantly. And so it’s guys just learning that when you make a big play, there’s people behind you, they’re chasing you. They’re coming from all angles, and we gotta do a better job being conscious of that.

“Guy’s got out of their game a little bit and got a little loose with it. So we’ll watch it on film. I don’t know exactly how the fumbles were created, but a lot of the things we talk about, I think, are what happened.”

The Wisconsin Badgers conclude their non-conference schedule today with as big of a matchup as they come in college football.

The 2-0 Badgers play host to 18-time national champion Alabama in a Big Ten-SEC showdown at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m.

It’s the first game in a home-and-home series between the Badgers and Crimson Tide with the return contest next year in Alabama. Wisconsin is coming off a 27-13 win over South Dakota, a team in the Football Championship Subdivision. Now, the Badgers will move up a weight class and then some when fourth-ranked Alabama and Heisman Trophy candidate Jalen Milroe comes to town.

The perennial power looks different this season. For the first time in 18 years, Nick Saban isn’t on the sidelines as the head coach. Saban, who won six national titles with Alabama, retired after last season, ending his legendary career. Kalen DeBoer, who led Washington to the College Football Playoff in 2023, has taken over in Tuscaloosa.

DeBoer has the Tide off and running, though it’s also been a work in progress. After a 63-0 victory in Week 1, Alabama struggled for three quarters against South Florida before pulling away in a 42-16 win last week.

After scratching out wins in tougher-than-expected games the first two weeks, Luke Fickell’s Badgers are a big underdog against Alabama. Can Wisconsin pull off the upset?

Alabama football LT Kadyn Proctor expected to play vs Wisconsin

Alabama football is expected to have a healthy offensive line for its first road game of the 2024 season against Wisconsin.

Alabama left tackle Kadyn Proctor is expected to play Saturday afternoon against Wisconsin, the Tuscaloosa News confirmed Friday.

Proctor sustained a shoulder injury during warm ups before the season opener vs. Western Kentucky. He left the field before the game with trainers and later emerged on the sideline in street clothes. Proctor also warmed up before Alabama vs. South Florida, but was held out.

On the SEC coaches teleconference Wednesday, Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer said Proctor has “been practicing” and “doing well” in the days leading up to the Crimson Tide’s meeting with Wisconsin.

“Really was headed in a good direction right at the very end of last week and turned the corner I think there,” DeBoer said. “(He) is in a good spot here, done a nice job here in the first two days of practice.”

Proctor was an All-SEC Freshman Team member in 2023. He entered the transfer portal after his freshman season and enrolled at Iowa in the spring. He returned to Alabama for his sophomore season.

Kadyn Proctor: Who will start on Alabama offensive line?

Elijah Pritchett started in Proctor’s place at left tackle Week 1. Pritchett, who also had “a minor ding” against Western Kentucky, appeared late against South Florida at right tackle. Guard Tyler Booker took over the left tackle spot, while Geno VanDerMark played left guard.

Heading into the 2024 season, Alabama’s starting offensive line was expected to be Proctor at left tackle, Booker at left guard, Washington transfer Parker Brailsford at center, Jaeden Roberts at right guard and either Pritchett or Wilkin Formby at right tackle.

Against South Florida, Formby had four holding calls against him and was removed late in the fourth quarter by Pritchett, who was initially held out.

Alabama vs Wisconsin Best bets: Odds, expert picks, expert predictions, player news, stats for September 14

It’s Friday, September 13th and we’ve got Week 3 action on the slate with the Alabama Crimson Tide and Wisconsin Badgers all set to square off from Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin tomorrow afternoon.

This is a non-conference matchup and the third-ever meeting between the Tide and Badgers. The two have not met since 2015 and 1928 before that, so this is not common territory for either school.

Alabama (12-2 last season) is 2-0 this year with a 42-16 victory over USF fueled by a 28-3 fourth quarter in Week 2. The Tide lost in the College Football Playoff to the eventual champion, Michigan Wolverines 27-20 in OT.

Wisconsin (7-6 last season) is 2-0 this year with 14-point victories over both Western Michigan and South Dakota. The Badgers season ended in a loss to LSU, 35-31 in the Reliaquest Bowl.

  • Money line: Alabama -800, Wisconsin +550
  • Spread: Alabama -16.5 (-110)

The odds for this game have stayed constant since opening, which implies this could be one of the sharper lines on the week. With Alabama using a +25 fourth quarter, the Tide could cover at any time. However, Wisconsin will be a step up in competition and looking for a season-defining win when they host Alabama.

NBC Sports Bet Best Bet

NBC Sports Betting Analyst Vaughn Dalzell has the following best bets for Saturday’s matchup between the Alabama Crimson Tide and Wisconsin Badgers in Week 3:

Wisconsin is rarely a home underdog, only eight times since 2005 has that happened. However, the Badgers are an impressive 6-2 ATS in those games. Despite the strong trend, Alabama is a different beast and most will agree that Jalen Milroe is more reliable and safer than Tyler Van Dyke.

The Tide’s defense is shaping up to be a dominant one and Wisconsin’s offense didn’t reach 30 points versus either Western Michigan or South Dakota. I lean toward Alabama and like the Under in this matchup which should be run-oriented. Alabama’s defense is a fun sprinkle to score a touchdown for Week 3 (+340) that we discussed on Bet the EDGE.

Quarterback matchup for Alabama vs. Wisconsin

  • Alabama: Jalen Milroe (70.6 QBR) has nine total touchdowns through two games and 475 yards. Milroe recorded two rushing scores in each of the first two games to start the season and ended last year with 12 rushing touchdowns along with 23 through the air. He looks on pace to eclipse both in his Heisman campaign.
  • Wisconsin: Tyler Van Dyke (31.6 QBR) is a Miami (FL) transfer that tossed 2,703 passing yards for 19 touchdowns to 12 interceptions for the Hurricanes last season. The Badgers quarterback has one touchdown pass on 63 attempts this season with a 60.3 completion percentage.

Alabama & Wisconsin team stats and betting trends

· Alabama posted 28 points in the fourth quarter against USF and out-scored its opponents 49-10 in the second half of the first two games.

· Jalen Milroe is one of the current front-runners for the Heisman. He sits eighth at +1100 odds on BetMGM and a win here should push him into the top five.

· Wisconsin has only been a home underdog in eight games since 2005, finishing 6-2 ATS (against the spread) in those matchups.

· The Badgers have two 100-yard rushers through two games, Chez Mellusi and Cade Yacamelli. Mellusi has a team-high three rushing touchdowns this season, which is one off from his season-high while he backed up Braelon Allen (12 TDs).
