Detroit City FC keeps rolling, tops Rhode Island for third win in a week

It was a good week for Detroit City FC.

Le Rouge picked up its third win in eight days by knocking off Rhode Island FC, 2-0, in a USL Championship matchup on Saturday at Hamtramck’s Keyworth Stadium.

DCFC (4-2-1) took advantage of an early red card to Rhode Island defender Frank Nodarse and scored twice in the span of three minutes to grab a lead that it wouldn’t relinquish.

Le Rouge struck first in the 17th minute off a corner kick that ended with Darren Smith tapping in a shot on the goal line. Then in the 20th minute, Smith scored off a feed from Connor Rutz, flicking the ball over the keeper from outside the box.

Being down a man and two goals was too much for Rhode Island, last season’s Eastern Conference champions, to overcome against DCFC, which began its win streak by rallying for a 3-2 win over Phoenix Rising FC last Saturday.

Le Rouge kept the good vibes rolling by beating Westchester SC, 3-1, on Wednesday to advance to the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

DCFC will return to action on April 26 at Keyworth Stadium against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
